The Sepia is a band from London, U.K. that blends EBM, industrial, and ambient sound into well-crafted songs where melody and intensity reside. I found all four songs to be incredibly strong, because the band knows song structure inside and out, and manipulates sound, texture, energy, and spatial/temporal elements incredibly well. The song Stutter starts the CD off at a relentless pace, moving along the traditional EBM line. But there are also glimpses of the pre-EBM era. If I had to provide a basis for comparison, the band’s sound is reminiscent of early eighties acts like Peter Godwin, and Yello mixed with Frontline Assembly. But do not misunderstand me, this music is portrayed in a contemporary manner. Certainly, the eighties derivation is a bit of a stretch, for this is no retro-eighties music project. But there are trace amounts of those bands, even if those elements linger in spirit. The sampler ends with the introspectively ambient song The Shallows. Unfortunately, no full-length CD is, as of yet, available from the band. A list of compilations CDs that include songs by The Sepia can be viewed on the band’s website. This collection leaves you hoping that a full-length CD is not too far off in the future.
