As one of the most admired and influential figures in EBM Johan Van Roy hardly needs any introduction and this double anthology brings together much of his best work, plus a few remixes. Over the years it's true to say that Johan has never strayed far from the essential harsh, uncompromising electro which sounds deceptively simple but has more than stood the test of time. The harsh distorted beats host his finest moments such as the all-time classics "Hellraiser", "Love Breeds Suicide" and "See You In Hell" as well as "Necrophilia" which is essential old skool EBM in it's purest form as well and the more melodic (relatively speaking) tracks such as "Dein Herz Mein Gier". The remixes that crop up, mainly on the second disc are less harsh with lighter rhythms, even when the track in question is "See You In Hell" or the fm mix of "Better Off Dead" which, apart from the tribal rhythm effects that add bite to the latter track could be seen as a concession towards those who enjoy the lighter electro styles. Likewise the 'Dead Body Mix' of "Desire" has greater space to breathe although the dark atmosphere remains intact. On such occasions the sound isn't a million miles away from Wumpscut and also gives a few clues as to where self confessed fans such as Aslan Faction get their influences from!!
When Van Roy deals with emotions and sexuality as he does on "Desire" and "Intercourse" the overall feel is hardly romantic or sensuous, searching the darker regions of the human psyche for inspiration, a search which culminates with the track "Murder", the final track on disc one and the ultimate in hard hitting electro, much like the ultimate crime that provides this track's inspiration.
So if you have even the slightest interest in EBM then this is one you simply must have. Over the years Johan Van Roy has become an EBM legend and this shows why.
