Trance Spirits, released on the Projekt Records label, is a collaborative effort from Steve Roach and percussionist Jeffrey Fayman. Trance Spirits is a combination of shamanic trance and ambient electronics. In addition to Roach and Fayman, Robert Fripp adds his guitar prowess and Frippertronics technology to provide an atmospheric layer in direct support of the music. Guest percussionist Momodou Kah, along with Jeffrey Fayman, further develop the trance elements of the recording with their incredible drumming technique, exploring the power of African and Middle Eastern percussion. The thunderous percussion of Taking Flight is reminiscent of an ancient tribal rite. The title track, Trance Spirits, begins with an intense display of percussion, and then subsides into a somber ambient soundscape of electronics, ocarinas, and ethereal whispers from Steve Roach's guitar. What this CD attempts to do is transcend spatial and temporal constraints by exploring the universal language of music. Roach and Fayman, by incorporating tribal acoustics and mimicking the inner essence of an ageless spirit, virtually reconstruct a forgotten language. This language assures a greater sense of depth and is rooted in the past by virtue of the ritual. If you are the type of person that likes ambient music, or has an interest in the music of tribal cultures, then I recommend this CD. The musicians are all of an excellent caliber, and the compositions, despite seeming repetitive on the surface from time to time, truly run very deep and strong.
