Seven Words is the English solo artist Paul Adams, signed to the English Independent Electronic label ‘Hand Held Halo’, this is Paul’s second release and debut single ‘Master Of My Mind’, this release like the debut album ‘A Flawed Paradigm’ once more shows that England still has something to offer on the Synth Pop scene.
‘Master Of My Mind’ is clearly an excellent Synth Pop single that will act as an excellent example of the work of Paul Adams, a catchy mid-paced track with a neat and simple synth riff complete with the now familiar strong vocals. Musically ‘Your Move’ is the stronger of the two tracks, it does seem to fall flat on the chorus but after listening to the track a number of times this isn’t the case, it fits in more with the track itself, an excellent and strong track that builds well as the track progresses, two very impressive Synth Pop tracks.
Like so many singles released in this day and age this single features remixes, thankfully it doesn’t feature a needless stream of remixes that seems to come with so many singles that get released (do we really need or genuinely want four, five or six remixes of one track on a CD single?). ‘Master Of My Mind’ features two remixes of the other track ‘Your Move’ but oddly none of the title track itself!!, both remixes are more Dance orientated but both thankfully retain the full vocals.
The ‘Monopoly Buzzy Mix’ is the better of the two remixes featured, mainly due to the fact it remains fairly close to the original, but it still lacks the strength and quality of the original itself, it does feature some good fuzzy, (or as in the title of the remix itself) buzzy analogue synths, the best part of the remix itself, despite not being a fan of remixes in general this is certainly one of the better remixes I’ve heard, no doubt it will go down well with many.
The ‘Phear Mix’ sounds less like the original track with the vocals given a distant effect leaving them almost semi-hidden in the background, if their is some reason or point for doing remixes like this then someone please explain it to me, because I clearly don’t see the need nor advantage in remixing ‘Your Move’ into this, like so much of the present Dance scene this remix is bland, boring and a waste of time, it strips away the strength and quality of the original track, why is beyond me, if the idea is to strip away and dilute the strength and quality of the original track purely for it to be made more accessible for Dance clubs, then directly or indirectly that’s throwing in the towel for what Synth Pop is.
Do yourself a favour and ignore buying needless Depeche Mode CD singles that are filled with pointless remixes and take an opportunity to sample something new from the English Synth Pop scene, if you have a genuine interest in Synth Pop itself then waste no time in buying a copy of this single and Paul’s previous release ‘A Flawed Paradigm’, to run the risk of being predictable you wont be disappointed with what Seven Words have to offer on both of these releases and hopefully the forthcoming new album.
