Rotersand's debut single "Merging Oceans" was a well-deserved dancefloor smash over the course of 2003 so the stakes were high for this debut album from the trio of Gun, Rasc and dancefloor specialist Krischan.
Although the extended atmospheric opening of the title track promises much of the same the rest of the album rarely approaches the all-out intensity of the single or the accompanying "Sonic Agony" (which builds from relatively quiet beginnings to a rip-roaring climax that has to be heard to be believed), opting for a more measured approach in places which means initial listenings might not reveal anything too exciting, aside from the instantly memorable melodic chorus of "Electronic World Transmission", a song that makes some pertinent points about the current level of press coverage, ably getting it's message across despite the mispronunciation of 'fetish' as 'feetish'!
Further listenings, though, soon see tracks such as "Almost Violent", "Content Killer" and "Social Distortion" all showing their worth in a danceable style that should appeal to Icon Of Coil fans, mixing a deeper vocal style with some effective EBM touches. The 'ripping' sounds that grace "Lifelight" are a novel touch, adding a gritty feel to the track that really makes all the difference. Indeed it seems that the trio are attempting to create music that's a little deeper than the usual dancefloor-fillers with tantalising hints throughout that there's more to this music than meets the ear. Some of the sound textures, for instance, far surpass many of their peers. This could be a result of the experience that Gun and Rasch have obtained through the years as long-standing members of the wave band The Fair Sex and it's this connection that could be responsible the accoustic guitar-based ballads "One Level Down" and the closing "Lush". While some might find a bit of a shock variety of this type is always to be welcomed.
Ignoring the mistake on the back cover which designates "Move On" as track 8 when it is, in fact "Merging Oceans" (a slap on the wrist for the record label there, I think!!) this is a fine debut that should appeal to electro fans everywhere.
