With this CDR release RMI have really gone all out in the ambient stakes, taking the listener on a magical mystery tour through sonic tapestries that defy description, embellished through massed sounds that hint at a myriad of possibilities. If all that soiunds like hyperbole then I defy you to describe it any better as the trio of Steve Dinsdale, Gary Houghton and Duncan Goddard have produced two tracks that, given the right atmosphere could well fill the old hippy aim of 'feeding your head' just as the old Krautrock/teutonic masters aimed to do, feeding their own heads with all manner of chemical and herbal substances.
The looped guitar that heralds "Monstrous Tides" and remains the one constant factor throughout the track's 9 minute duration is a definate look back towards those halcyon days of the early 70s, being joined by all manner of melodic and atonal effects. However this is just a starter before you attempt to get your teeth into the mighty 59 minute "Startide". This is actually one of the earliest tracks RMI ever recorded (although you'd never guess to hear it) and boasts a multitude of sounds that, while threatening to go totally out on a limb never quite do so as any abstract phrases here (and many do crop up throughout) are held in check by sequencing that acts as part of the sonic tapestry, rather than providing the impetus for the piece and some flute-like Mellotron sounds (the type that NO other synth can emulate!) that weave their way in and around the sonic tapestry. The tension-filled climax provides one last gasp before fading away into nothingness.
Like any music of it's kind this is best experienced in the dark, preferably on headphone where the music can be more readily absopbed and appreciated (being stoned isn't strictly necessary but it probably doesn't hurt either!!). RMI may not be everyone's cup of tea but sometimes you just need to stretch yourself that little bit more, in which case you'll not want to miss this one.
