So who, exactly, are the Skulls? The Skulls are friends of Red Flag who were recruited to remix some songs. The songs span the career of Red Flag: from 1989’s Naïve Art album to 2001’s Fear Of A Red Planet. ‘Control’ was a B-side on the 1988 ‘Broken Heart’ single. Red Flag’s songs, in general, are appealing to their fans because of their intimate nature and catchy melodies. This honest approach to songwriting and composition allows for some interesting results to be obtained from the remixing process. With strong remixes from Cosmicity, Information Society, Cause And Effect, Shades Of Grey, Scribe Machine, and Wave In Head, the Skulls CD is a consistently excellent listening experience. The blistering synthpop of ’Nevermind http:’ opens up the CD, followed by the restraint and aggression of ’Cause and Consequence.’ The bass heavy mix of ‘On The Highway’ picks up the mood. Other excellent songs are the crushingly beautiful ’I Don’t Know Why,’ the manic synthpop of ’Russian Radio,’ and the frenzy of “Take Care Love.’ Though I think it would be better for someone unfamiliar with Red Flag’s music to sample their work in the original format, this will appeal to fans of classic synthpop in general.
