Phraze’s Winter E.P. is an intriguing blend of synthpop, drum & bass, and catchy melodic arrangements. Phraze is actually the work of Andreas Grunskij. With a classic synthpop song like On The Top embedded between the solemn track Winter and a Winter remix, the pace is set, fluctuating between euphoric synth, amphetamine beats, and introspective moments where light falls short of shadow.
What is apparent from listening to this collection is that Andreas Grunskij has an incredible sense of arrangement, knowing when to push and pull in perfect measure. I thought the sequencing of the songs worked real well, avoiding redundancy that so often accompanies a collection of songs combined with remixed versions. The lyrics are simple and to the point. The vocals could have been stronger, but Grunskij’s musical abilities outweigh the vocal concerns. I also thought that the synthpop element could have been developed further, but due to the time/space constraints of the E.P. format, this is understandable.
Overall, I would highly recommend this E.P. On a side note, the artist’s web site has an interesting Phraze remix of the :wumpscut: track Wreath Of Barbs.
