Peter Gabriel's Up has been a long time coming. I remember hearing of this gem as far back as 1998. And now I'm faced with the biggest question of all: was it worth the wait? Yes. The album is certainly an amazing achievement. It takes the best aspects of Gabriel's previous work and brings them all together into a single, definitive sound. This album is definitely a ride. From the first track, it will surprise you, constantly shifting from gritty to beautiful in the opener, Darkness. Any who heard Ovo or the Red Planet soundtrack will recognize the sound from The Tower That Ate People. This track leads into one of the coolest Gabriel songs ever recorded, Growing Up, which seems to be a quiet ballad but turns into an absolutely groovalicious dance song.
There are some great tracks on this album. Really great songs. And the cohesiveness of the album is a sight to behold. It flows so incredibly well from track to track, mood to mood. I can't convey how well this album fits together, you must hear it for yourself.
If you have a musical bone in your body, get this album. Unless you're a synth purist who isn't happy unless you're listening to a Depeche Mode clone. If that's you, take a hike. Up has its slow moments, but its great moments are truly wonderful and well worth the price of admission. I hope this isn't the last we hear of Peter for a while. He's definitely on his way up.
