Neuropa’s Bound is an excellent song. Here is why.
Excellence manifests itself in many different guises, but one common denominator of excellence is its imperviousness to banality. Can one song from a band capture that fleeting epiphanous moment? Yes it can.
Musical composition is difficult to master because as a composer your job is basically to piece together a series of abstractions or sounds. These abstractions are used to produce melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic structure. These structural abstractions are layered and, when heard in sequence, can provoke a referential emotion or thought in the mind of the listener. This is why one person can hear a song and love it, and another person can hear the same song and think it terrible.
The process of musical composition is similar to that of writing, but with one exception: words have a clear definition. In essence words have a quantitative value. These words are then organized and processed by grammatical rules. Music, too, has a grammar. However, the sounds produced are devoid of an inherent definition, and therefore lack a certain quantitative value. However, as listeners we do use a qualitative system of evaluating sound. This becomes the reference point or definition in the mind of the listener. In other words, while listening to music, your brain is rapidly evaluating whether a particular series of sounds is pleasing or frightening. As individuals, we have accumulated a reference guide based on our individual experiences and our own aesthetic value system. It is this reference guide that I use to write a music review.
By my standards, Bound is an excellent song. In the synthpop genre in particular, it is very difficult to stand out from the crowd. Synthpop in general is melody driven and therefore most of it is quite pleasant to listen to. Albert Martinez and Jason Last of Neuropa manage to blend striking lyrics with superb music and vocal arrangements. The band consistently exudes a high standard of quality and creativity throughout the CD. What is also incredible about the song Bound is the disparate variations that can be found on the remixed versions of the song. The stunningly euphoric remix by Matt Morris of Iris and the solemn remix by John Giacobello of Count To Infinity are absolutely amazing. This taps into what I was stating before about individual reference points and how one listener can choose an interpretation completely different from the other. Also included is the incredible ballad After The Rain, which is a song exclusive to this release and offers further proof of Neuropa‘s mastery of the synthpop genre.
