Negative Format’s Static EP is a collection of new tracks and remixes. As opposed to the cosmic trance of 2000’s Distant Pulses LP, this release takes more of an aggressive EBM approach as the total collection of songs are, according to the Negative Format site, “inspired by hard trance.” I find the Static EP perfect for the dance floor or just a great album to listen to while, say, writing music reviews.
Alex Matheu, based out of the Tampa, Florida area, is the talent behind Negative Format. He is responsible for all of the lyrics, musical arrangements, synths, loops, and vocals. I found all of the remixes to be exceptionally strong, and despite the Static track being the focal point, the Downfall track is also excellent. It would have been interesting to review an entire album of new material as opposed to the EP format, but the strength of the material avoids the abyss of redundancy. Matheu’s compositional strengths are a great command of melody and an ability to build and release tension with the juxtaposition of the trance/EBM combination. Inclusion of the lyrics was a nice touch.
