Continuing on where the 2002 'Static' EP left off, Negative Format's Alex Matheu has put together a brilliant album worth of melody driven, densely complex, trance-laced electronic music. This CD should finally earn the proper critical acclaim in the U.S. that Negative Format has already received in Europe. Three of the songs, "Static," "Sense," (which appears as a remixed/alternate version on this CD entitled "Senseless") and "Downfall," were released on the 'Static' EP. The other eight compositions are new. Tracks such as "Automate" and "Algorythm" highlight the complex rhythms and atmospheric quality of the music. Blending aspects of the traditional EBM style with elements of trance, ambient, drum-n-bass, and techno, the ever-evolving Negative Format has become one of the few American beacons in the re-emerging EBM scene. Poignant lyrics are often not a focal point when discussing electronic music. As he did on the 'Static' EP, Alex included the lyrics to the songs on 'Cipher Method.' I can attest to the fact that, in addition to possessing an uncanny knack for composition, Alex is a very good songwriter. What makes this CD excellent is Alex's ability to change gears and employ different elements of electronic music throughout the album in a flawless manner. Like cool flowing water under an icy glaze, 'Cipher Method' possesses the depth and fluidity that one should expect from a great CD.
