MOON ROCK - A DAY LIKE THIS EP
A DAY LIKE THIS EP
This release by Moon Rock offers four new tracks, plus remixed versions of See A Lot from the Eclipse Of The Mood (2002) CD and Everybody Everywhere from the Power To The People (2001) CD. What is different about the synthpop of Moon Rock is that it is totally devoid of any musical reference to Depeche Mode, which is quite refreshing. The vocal style of Jack D. Elliot, on A Day Like This and especially on When It’s Real, is structurally reminiscent of Jesus and Mary Chain and Joy Division with a synthpop makeover. Life’s A Gas, with luscious vocals by Lynne Timmes, is an interesting synth rendition of the song by the highly influential glam band T-Rex. In mentioning these three bands, there is a certain element of guitar-based spirit at the core of Moon Rock’s music. I think this provides an interesting compositional approach to synthpop music and pushes the music away from the overused synthpop formula that has seduced so many bands. Dan Morgan’s and Jack Elliot’s various musical excursions of their collective past have been instrumental in attaining an original sound that needs to be explored further in the future. The sultry vocal style of Jemma on the remix tracks See A Lot is slightly similar to the ethereal world of Julee Cruise and further contributes to the overall mood and texture of the CD. Note: Read Carl Jenkinson’s review of Moon Rock’s Eclipse Of The Mood CD. It’s right on target.
