UTURN 1 - AN EXPLORATION IN TRANCE
The Uturn series, according to the Artoffact Records website, is a series “dedicated to injecting club oriented dance music into the electro scene.” This mix of trance and techno is high energy, and the inclusion of two different artists on the same CD affords an interesting interpretation of both genres. Massiv in Mensch, hailing from Germany, starts the split CD off with incredible intensity. It is the track Kruegers Krieger where Massiv in Mensch really shine. The icy cool drum programming and razorblade synth arrangements collide and, ultimately, elevate the song above the rest of their material. Overall, the Massiv in Mensch offerings are more techno in nature than trance. Where the trance aspect of this CD really comes to light is with the Negative Format tracks. Personally, I think the trance/techno combined genre is owned by Negative Format. Alex Matheu has a great ability to create atmosphere without forsaking melody or the dance floor. All of the tracks are absolutely killer, especially Optics and the euphoric track Surface. I also highly recommend Negative Format’s Static EP that was released earlier this year. In closing, this is an interesting CD that offers the listener two very different avenues in which to choose from.
I was expecting a lot more from this cd, maybe too much. It is nothing I haven’t heard many of times before. I do recommend NF’s static ep. Very good!

Just more EBM folk trying to pass themselves off as Trance. Apparently if you write EBM songs without vocals you’re suddenly a Trance/Techno crossover band, according to this CD anyway. They almost got it right tho - it’s as redundant & boring as Trance...if not more so. Gotta love bandwagons.
