Italo Disco: The New Generation Volume 2 |

An ode to the synthesizer; "I'm So Glad You Came Along." "I'm So Glad You Came Along" is a song by the iconic 1970's r&b/disco band the Trammps, yes, the same Trammps that gave the world the sizzling "Disco Inferno." I'm so glad the synthesizer came along, because if it hadn't we would not have synth pop and Italo disco music today as the synthesizer is the major instrument used in the creation of both these genres of music. I love Italo, you know this, so I was thrilled to see the new release Italo Disco: The New Generation, vol. 2.
Italo: TNG 2 is smokin' hot. Italo Disco: The New Generation, vol. 1 was mind blowin' incredible, but Italo: TNG 2 is waaaay better. Italo: TNG 2 really focuses on the new artists of the Italo scene. Italo: TNG 1 gave us a mix of new stuff by new kids mixed with new stuff by Italo legends. With Italo: TNG 2 the only legend in the bunch is Eddy Huntington and his incredible track "Honey Honey!" So the new kids rule Italo: TNG 2, and rule it they do with track after awesome track of diverse, interesting, exciting, electronic Italo.
Each and every track of Italo: TNG 2 is excellent, so instead of going through them all I'll just pick out a few to mention. Tommy Sun's "Dancer" with its almost deadpan, almost emotionless, broken English vocals contains electronic hooks that pull you in and mesmerize you. "In A World Of Fantasy," by Boris Zhivago is full of beautifully engaging dreamlike electronics. If electricity could mimic the human voice it would sound like Mirko Hirsch. Mirko Hirsch with that incredible voice delivers the enthralling "Love On The Run." It is not a remake of the Human League classic, but an infectious electronic masterpiece from the Italo maestro. Amaya's "Sensation" is a sensationally festive electronic track that makes you want to dance. Vyck Vyo is the man with the Thomas Anders (Modern Talking) voice. Vyo’s voice coupled with dizzying frenetic electronics, and fast paced bpm of "Elena" make a wonderfully caustic combination. And when Mr. Vyo sings out that "oooh-ooooooh-oh," he makes me smile. All are wonderful and they run the gamut from sizzling electronics that will fry your brain, to thumping thundering versions that will pound your brain to pulp.
Years ago Frida of ABBA had a solo hit "There's Something Going On," and there is definitely something going on with this Italo resurgence. Last year when I wrote my review of Italo: TNG 1 I informed you that there were no Italo tracks on any of the music charts. Well what a difference a few months make. On the May euro dance/club charts are several tracks found on Italo: TNG 2. They include both TQ tracks "Let's Go To Tokyo," and "Let The Night Remain Forever," Vanello and Steven Kimber's "S.O.S For Love," and Lenroy's "Do You," plus a couple of recent Italo hits not found on the Italo: TNG compilations (yet), Boy Blue's "Sadness In Her Eyes," and Alan Brando's "Once Upon A Time." As I write this, on the euro albums charts, Italo: TNG 2 holds the #1 position while Italo: TNG 1 occupies the #8 spot. How about that? Both of them hot-selling top 10 compilations.
I recently discovered that Italo is sizzling hot and scorching in Mexico. That makes me wonder if the astounding track "Follow Me To Mexico" by the visually interesting band Italove is meant to reflect the genres popularity in that country. In the video for "Follow Me To Mexico" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8Ek8n0GV8g Blix, the lead singer, is wearing a beautiful Italo Disco T-shirt. Just how popular is Italo today? Well after seeing Blix in that T-Shirt I decided that I wanted one too. I went to Amazon.com and searched under clothing for an Italo disco T-shirt. Up popped hundreds of Italo Disco T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies. The Italo hoodies were awesome and I wanted one. But no hoodie came with the logo found on the Italo: TNG 2 CD booklet which is the one on Blix’s T-shirt. I searched and searched but I could not find one with that exact logo. I guess I'll settle for the black hoodie with "I Heart Italo Disco."
Each day more new artists and record labels enter the Italo scene. With the popularity of ZYX Music's Italo Disco Collection, and the Italo Disco: The New Generation series, I'm sure there will be an Italo: TNG 3 compilation. When Italo: TNG 3 does hit the streets maybe you will be introduced to tracks from the exciting Italo record label M@N Records, and new Italo artists like Chito, Andy Romano, and Casanova. Chito's "Julia," Andy Romano's "Lady Of Fire," and Casanova's "Angel Eyes" are heavily requested Italo radio favorites.
If you check out ZYX's Italo Disco: The New Generation, vol. 2 and dig it, then check out Italo Disco: The New Generation, vol. 1 (if you don't have it already) and enjoy new kids digging creating fresh new Italo for TNG....it's really good stuff, you will dig it too.
