Intuition's second album sees the duo of Ken & Garrett following the footsteps of De/Vision & Iris by opting for more of a pop/rock feel with the guitars, courtesy of one Jason Stillwell as well as a number of other guests, playing a much greater role in the music.
That's not to say that this is a 'heavy' album in any way, as the guitar actually adds an additional MOR element to the closing 'Words Don't Mean A Thing' but, elsewhere, the dynamic, rocking edge that makes 'Whole' such an unexpected treat might cause your head to bang just that tiny fraction, thanks in part to the addition of another guitarist Chris Nuttall. For the most part, though, the duo's pop sensibilities still hold sway, mixing well with the slightly sharper rhythmic edge that saves the opening 'Stronger' from overly twee realms while 'Staring Off At Nothing' & 'I Scream' again recall a slightly lighter, less dramatic version of Iris with Porter's vocals having the range to make the most of the music's dynamic properties. The following "Tomorrow" tries the same trick (& is extremely similar, all things considered) although it lacks the robust feel that permeated the preceeding track while "When I Die" benefits from an imaginative sample that acts like a garnish to the opening synth work & a touchingly emotive chorus making this one of the album's highlights.
That's not to say it's all good news as it does get a bit bland & wishy-washy in places with 'Take Me Away' proving somewhat dull & not really lingering in the memory much once it's finished while 'Beside You' sounds uncannily like a Stock, Aitken & Waterman track, in fact, I found it impossible not to mentally hear Jason Donovan singing it. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing in itself, nor is it meant as an insult to anyone (although it's something I could personally do without!), in fact I'm sure the girlies will go a bundle on both this one & the following 'Remember Me', various elements of which manage to resemble The Rembrandts I'll Be There For You, Mister Mister's Kyrie & Savage Gardens's I Believe but if you can get on with that then there's no reason why this album shouldn't give you a good deal of listening pleasure.
