I was well impressed with German duo Final Selection when I heard the demo of this album over a year ago now now and now that their debut finally seen the light of day on the Polish Black Flames label I'm even more impressed.The duo of Mario Tews and Riccardo Schult have put together a belter that will appeal to all lovers of solid rhythmic electro, not quite commercial enough to be called 'future pop' although it I doubt this will stop many from labelling it as such!
The war sounds that open "Salvation" might cause you to think you're listening to the latest Funker Vogt album (and with titles like "Dead Hero" who could blame you?) but Final Selection do have a darker, more emotional approach to music as proven by "When You Turn Your Back To Me" and the solemn "Divine Punishment" (I was reminded of a harder hitting Neuroactive more than once which can't be a bad thing!). The typically accented vocals compliment but never overpower proceedings, probably not quite catchy enough to sing-along to in many cases which leaves the music as the dominating force, although they work in perfect unision with some superb synth melodics during the mid-paced "Absent Minded" which is a winner by any standards, contrasting sharply with the rough whispers of the harder-edged "Your Smile" . "Tears" is the track that's likely to gain the most attention with it's pulsating rhythms and catchy chorus that is bound to have dancefloors all aquiver wherever it's played. Given this it might seem a bit odd to then include a half-paced mix as well but that is what the 'Still Weepin' mix is all about. At least it retains the catchy chorus so it's a worthwhile enough offering although I do wish they'd put it on last!. If you're in the hunt for further dancefloor killers then look no further than the rapid fire "Static City" (although there's nothing static about this track!) or "I Never Wanted More", just two highlights amongst many on this superb debut that no electro fans should be without.
