This is the debut release for this Dublin based Irish Electronic trio Empire State Human, ‘Martian Anthems’ features 13 original tracks of mainly mid-pace Electronic Pop centred on Kraftwerk, 80s Synth Pop and at times a touch of 90s Dance music while the vocals are light and unique, part sung, part spoken and quite similar to Russell Mael, Neil Tennant and occasionally Jimmy Somerville. The lyrics also feature a heavy Science Fiction theme but not necessarily along the same lines as S.P.O.C.K!!
The best tracks here are the more mid-paced numbers with a clear Kraftwerk sound and style, tracks like ‘Apollo’ (its title and spoken samples speaking for themselves), ‘Leap Of Faith’ (complete with some nice female backing vocals), ‘Talking With Aliens’, ‘Pulse’, ‘Night Flight’ (also appeared on ‘Shadow Dancing 2’) and ‘Voice Of Radioland’ to the more up-tempo tracks ‘Paradise’ and ‘Adrenalin’. There are a number of instrumental tracks here like the up-tempo title track, the more mid-paced ‘Cubalist’ and the slow heavy thud of ‘Flight From Mars’, there is also the more 90s and Dance orientated track ‘Wounded’. A promising debut that offers something different to the present Synth Pop scene.
