CHRISTMAS WISH
This single was originally released this time last year, but in obtaining a copy earlier this year it was both too late and too early to add a review of this ‘seasonal single’ to the EGN, so here we are now :-)
Unfortunately within the present Synth Pop scene we tend to look in the same direction when it comes to new releases and partly as a result of this there are a number of new releases that simply slip our attention for a number of reasons each year, one of these releases was made last year by an un-signed English solo act called Electraset who are centered around keyboardist Roy Mullin and a selection of guest vocalists and on this track the added assistance of Steve Bonshor and with the CD sleeve Nigel Mullin. Roy has been involved in a number of English Electronic bands down through the years and also DJ’s at a number of towns in the English midlands including Leicester and his hometown of Nottingham, birthplace of one Andrew Fletcher. This three track single ‘Christmas Wish’ includes two versions of the single itself including a remix with the third track being a simple Christmas medley while the single also has the distinction of being a rare Christmas Synth Pop track.
REVIEW
Despite being a Christmas track, ‘Christmas Wish’ is by no means simply another novelty Christmas record, but thankfully a straight Electro Pop track in the same way that the Erasure track ‘She Wont Be Home’ is, so fear not as ‘Christmas Wish’ is a solid track with a light mid-paced feel with a bouncy edge that builds well to a strong chorus filed with seasonal bells while the excellent lead and backing vocals of Karen Whiting combine especially well on that chorus while there is also a varied selection of arrangements and vocals through out the track itself to make it both an excellent and very impressive ‘Christmas’ Electro Pop track while the second version of the track is a remixed version titled ‘Soul Version’ which is a more stripped down version of the track itself that allows the vocals to shine through against simple synth work and neat piano melodies that come through towards the end of the track itself while the seasonal bells add some weight to the chorus to complete an excellent remix that fully retains the original version while the third and final track is a medley of familiar Christmas tunes with the occasional vocal sample being added in this simple and fun track with an almost bouncy Erasure feel to the track itself. ‘Christmas Wish’ is easily one of the better Christmas Electro Pop tracks that you will get to hear.
