LOSING TOUCH EP
Although this American trio have benefitted greatly from the US synthpop scene their music will appeal to rock fans as much as (if not more than) synthpoppers. The heavy guitar presence on the opening "Halogen" reminds me slightly of the UK band Manuskript but without the obvious goth influences but with a very appealing rock style that would have been a real powerhouse if it didn't sound slightly muffled!! Although this does detract from this powerful number a little it's still an undeniably good song delivered with verve and a dose of good old fashioned spunk, something that the 'Nuclear Sky' mix has the good sense to retain albeit with more electro touches. The mechanical feel adds a bit of bite and the piece as a whole retains the verve and dynamics of the original which is a good move. The equally lively "Losing Touch" with it's solid rhythmic background and the club mix of "Survive", which empasises their dancey side with another catchy chorus show that this is very much their strong point. Where things go a bit flat is when they attempt something a bit slower such as in the case of "Urban Flatline" where the guitar noodlings and more laid back approach make for a piece that just fails to engage the listener and is too MOR-sounding by half, something that is always a danger when bands like this try for a softer sound. Much the same can be said of "All In A Breath" which is similarly uninspiring although the closing CO2 mix fairs better by setting a pleasantly ambient mood.
Despite my reservations about the blandness of certain tracks it's a fair bet that Edenants will have a wide appeal due in part, ironically enough to this very easy on the ear approach that is so accessable. Having said that the more dynamic tracks prove that when they're good they're very very good and I'm sure their gigs are well worth experiencing, too.
