This 12 track CD is the debut release from this German trio who are signed to the promising new German label IntraPop. I had previously reviewed a promo copy of this CD in the latest issue of my fanzine ‘Synthetic Vision’ along with an interview with the band itself, yes a shameless plug :-) Dynamic Masters produce a very familiar style of purist German Synth Pop with an occasional hard-edge and dark melancholy twist combined with lead male and female vocals, a feature that seems to be unique to the present Synth Pop scene while the CD itself features a selection of tracks from the past three years that have been brought together and recorded for this album.
There are many excellent tracks here, some of the highlights include the opening and mid-paced ‘I’m Not Sorry’, the very catchy ‘Its All Over’, a track filled with some fantastic analogue synths and in my view very much the ideal track for release as a single also the bouncy and mid-paced ‘Modern Babylon’, a track that’s being remixed by Equatronic who in turn have had their ‘No Tomorrow’ track from their superb and classic debut ‘Shadowland’ remixed by Dynamic Masters, that remix is appearing on a forthcoming split ‘E.P’ which features Equatronic while the IntraPop label are planning a re-release of that long since deleted Equatronic album ‘Shadowland’ and finally there is the more up-tempo ‘Side By Side’ with the addition of its vocoder vocals working well with the mixed lead vocals of Jens & Heike.
Other excellent tracks of note include the up-tempo ‘Nightmare’, its title reflecting the dark lyrical content of the song itself, the general decline of the world we live in while equally dark and almost sinister like is ‘Lights Went Dim’ with a lyrical content to match, it features some excellent synth riffs while the song itself oddly changes pace half way through to a more slower and mid-paced finish. Another track with a dark edge, both musically and lyrically is the mid-paced ‘Silent Screams’, the track itself begins with near operatic female vocals over pounding rhythms with an excellent lyrical content warning of the continual damage we inflict on our environment and planet in general while that unique feature of mixed lead vocals works especially well on tracks like the up-tempo ‘In Your Arms’ and the more mid-paced tracks ‘Tonight’ and ‘Come With Me’ while the album closes with the near seven minutes of the mid-paced ballad ‘On My Own Again’ complete with some excellent sweeping analogue synths towards the end of the track itself.
‘Decade’ is a near perfect debut album that features some excellent purist Synth Pop that’s been very much part of the German scene over the years, its an album that will easily (and rightly so) gain the attention and interest of those with a preference for this brand of German Synth Pop while ‘Decade’ itself will easily go down as one of the better Synth Pop albums you will hear this year. If your buying the latest releases from both De/Vision & Wolfsheim then do yourself a favour and add another CD from another German act to your order and make that CD ‘Decade’, you will not be disappointed.
