Distain seem to be one of those bands who never really become darlings of the synthpop scene but consistently turn out excellent music year after year with the albums "Cement Garden" and the recently re-released "Liquid" being their finest moments to date. It's been a few years since we heard anything from the band, partly due to Oliver Faig and Sebastian Von Wyschetzki leaving with frontman Alexander Braun being joined by Manfred Thomaser so it's good to see them back in action and in fine form with this new single.
The title "America" has all sorts of connotations these days and while the lyrics ask some pertinent questions about the USA (not critically, I might add!) this is an attention-grabbing piece with thumping rhythms laying a solid basis for the imposing sequencing. The 'Texas Mix' stays pretty faithful to the original although the 'Memphis Mix' turns the track into a full-on dancefloor killer that should do the business in clubs. Hey, if they play their cards right there could be another 48 remixes where these two came from, although, luckily, neither of the mixes here evoke any feelings of the states they are named after.
When I saw that the band had covered "Nights In White Satin" I must admit I prepared myself for the worst, I mean, how can you cover a track like that? So it's to Distain's credit that their version isn't that bad, adding some gentle electronic sounds but more or less maintaining the haunting beauty of the original although it must be said that Braun's vocals are not a patch on Justin Hayward's. "Are You Independent?" completes the line-up and is a fine catchy track, as good as the title track, I'd say and promising much for the band's future output.
