SOVIET …a nicely shot and edited video outlining the daily chore of commuting to and from work complete with a faded whitewash look that’s works well with the content of the video itself while the superb track (one of he best on the DVD itself) works well to produce a perfect video.
FREEZEPOP …simple and colourful animation works extremely well with both the track itself and the band in general; any other style of video and both the track and especially the music would be completely lost. What better way to show Freezepop in a video format.
BLOW-UP … a black-n-white video with a seemly a strong message to tell, the failing success of a rock/pop star? I’ve no clear idea to what is happening here, but the track itself really did nothing for me, easily my least favourite track, its simply too modern and dancey and above all annoyingly repetitive.
NASA…simple black-n-white footage that features a clever use of spilt screens in a moving semi-circle effect with the band itself dancing away from screen to screen, as I said, simple and clever, but it does tend to get slightly repetitive and can leave you feeling a bit dizzy after watching it ;-)
COSMICITY …this is a computer graphic style of video that features a screen at the centre of the video featuring live footage of Cosmicity while the mid-paced track isn’t one of the better ones I’ve heard from Mark Nicholas and it doesn’t help in watching this video. I think this type of video tends to works well with either or both heavy up-tempo Dance music or a simple and quite ambient track, but looks somewhat lost with an average Synth Pop track.
ELECTROSQUAD …a cleverly colour co-ordinated video that reflects the lyrical content of the song itself combined with overtones of James Bond images in a wide screen format with an excellent and very nice Erasure style track with vocals to match. What was I’m sure a simple and easy video to shoot has turned out to be a very effected and impressive video at that.
NUKLEON …a simple and straightforward video featuring a mixture of animation and a video screen where Dan Burke performs the song itself, good and all as it is, it does lack something, but I think the excellent song is both good and strong enough to carry the video itself.
MOULIN NOIR …a story led video seemly centred on a woman drawing a picture of a crying eye complete with dark and moody overtones with a excellent ballad like track to match, a track with more than a touch of Gary Numan, O.M.D & Howard Jones in both with the music and vocals. I’ve no clear idea to what the video itself is about, but over all its looks good and seems to work well with the track itself, but I think the strength of the track does tend to help the video along.
GANYMEDE …the band themselves have explained on the DVD what they where trying to achieve with the overall look with this video, which is fine, but for a bright and lively track taken from their forthcoming and double new album ‘Space & Time’ the video should have been more reflected of the track itself, for example there could have been some more scenes centred around the car, but for a simple video with partially a negative style colouring it does achieve something, least not in drawing more attention towards the new song itself.
NEUROACTIVE …a nicely pieced together video featuring computer graphic animation mixed with footage of various scenes featuring the band itself, looks simple with seemly no storyline, but works well enough to hold your attention, least not to that excellent and strong mid-paced track and the dry semi-spoken vocals of Vesa Rainne.
T.H.E.M …their had to be one among the twenty that did its best to try and take things a step to far, a largely black-n-white ‘tease to please’ video with soft porn overtones featuring a track with male and female vocals that whisper and breath across the sparse and bouncy electronics. I like the track itself and some will easily label it as Electroclash, but as for the video, this kind of content does tend to deflect interest away from the track and the music in general rather than towards it. But if colour, glamour and a semi-controversial content within a video attract interest, then so be it, but hopefully it’s more towards the music itself, but I some how doubt it.
NEUROPA …a very simple video shot in what looks like a reservoir and largely done so in a tunnel, but nicely shot from a selection of different angles, edited well it works in the end and fits in well with the mainly excellent track itself. A shame about the addition of that guitar :-(
FR/ACTION …this is a simple black-n-white clip set in an underground car park centred around a mugging with the over all feel and style of the video featuring more than a hint of a Clint Eastwood film about it, despite its simplicity, it’s a strong and effective video that works well and above all fully reflects the lyrical content of the song itself to the extend that its draws attention to the track which is exactly what a video is meant to do, right :-)
B!MACHINE …a nicely shot video in a seemly disused airfield or at least some kind of military base while the video itself easily mirrors the track itself with a dry, cold and almost detached feeling, its mainly an excellent track, despite lacking something to make it stand out, but over all everything here is pieced together nicely to produce an interesting video. Is their some kind of secret and hidden message in this video, anti-nuclear or anti-war or am I just too wide of the mark on this one :-)
NULL DEVICE …a simple video with dark and moody overtones that works really well with the track itself, a mainly excellent track at that with a good vocalist, but the track itself tends to fall short on the chorus and doesn’t reach the heights in which it should. Over all it looks good, is well edited and largely another excellent video that does the job.
GARY FLANAGAN …a simple and effective video that partially echoes DM’s ‘Enjoy The Silence’, I especially like the old and grainy look of the camera work, it fitted in nicely with the simplicity of the video itself. Over all it works well with both the song and above all its lyrical content.
AXOE …a double vision effect with an orange washed look is as visually strong as the track itself, but may be too strong and heavy on the eyes, but allowing for that, it looks reasonably good with a strong and hard-edged track with deep-ish vocals. It would have been interesting to see this video without the effects and coloured look, may be it would have looked all the better for it in ‘black-n-‘white’.
BLUE AUDIO …a nicely shot and edited video featuring plenty of outdoor footage of American suburbia with seemly a story to tell, its mainly centred around a young and attractive girl who works in an office, its also an excellent and seemly optimistic track of what’s been labelled as ‘modern synth pop’ with both the track and the video itself working together very nicely to produce an excellent video.
THE PEOPLES …bright and colourful images of Summer that becomes almost psychedelic towards the end of the video itself, no story or anything to really grab your attention or draw your focus to, so just as well that this mainly excellent mid-paced track with more than a hint of early-80s O.M.D is the main attention here. Not exactly a video to watch again and again, but the track and band itself does show some degree of promise.
BRAVE NEW WORLD … the only live video of the twenty featured, this is seemly taken from a concert where BNW where support act for Alpaville, over all its looks good and is nicely shoot and everyone seems to be having a good time, both the band and least not the audience :-)
