That Celluloide are so obviously inspired by the synthpop of the 80s means that a set of 80s covers was the logical next step. These tracks are actually available to download for free from the band's website and should see the band's fans OK until the next album is released.
It must be said though that the trio of Darkleti, u-0176 and Patryck Holdwem have made a fairly eclectic choice of covers and seems to be based on their own personal tastes rather than any commercial considerations. The opening "Amoureux Solitaires", for example, was originally by Lio and was probably a hit in France way back when. For anyone who knows the Celluloide sound, the band make it their own and although Darkleti's voice doesn't seem so suited to this brighter, happier song, her slightly off-key vocals actually prove to be pretty effective in this case. Best track is the cover of Dead Can Dance's "In Power We Trust The Love Advocated" which is so catchy it should prove a popular number in it's own right.
The inclusion of tracks by Cure's "Three Imaginary Boys", Souxsie and The Banshees' "Happy House" and the pacey, foot-tapping cover of The Sisters Of Mercy's "Alice" seem to indicate that Celluloide spent their formative years listening to more new-wave/goth stuff than electropop although while the version of Lush's "Lights From A Dead Star" might raise suspicions of shoegazing tendancies! As ever, though, the band inject their own old-skool synthpop style into every track and manage to give these pieces a new lease of life, even if some of the aforementioned band's hardcore fans might find them a bit bemusing!!
