The Sunrise EP sneaks up on you, covers your eyes and whispers into your ear "you will love me." And you will. The new offering from Rob and Keith is quite different, but also quite good. The songs are deceptively simple, moody but optimistic. On headphones, it is nothing short of amazing. They have returned from several years off and have effortlessly, or so it seems, outclassed and outdone just about every "modern" synthpop (an oxymoron?) band around. They've also managed to reinvent themselves yet again, creating a sound that, while not totally new, is definitely far from the sonic traps that most bands fall into. As you groove along, you can almost hear them in the background yelling "Why sound like Depeche Mode when you can sound like Everything But The Girl gone, well... MORE pop? "The hints of guitar on a few tracks help too, reminding those of us who loved 97's Innermost Station (the rest of you simply have no taste) of how wonderful these guys can be. Few bands can hang on to the past yet be so different at the same time. Cause And Effect are one.The only thing that holds it back is its length. By the time you're really getting into it, it's over. And the remixes don't help much. Only the Halou mix of Into The Light did anything for me, the others were overly repetitive and unnecessary. This deserved to be a full album. Maybe next time around.
