One of the best things about underground music is that no matter how well you think you know the scene there's always an excellent act waiting for you to discover them. That has been very much the case here as this is the third Boole release and if you like electro then this is one you'll want to check out pronto. While the Assemblage 23 remix of "Blow Up The World" will doubtless help this album gain the respect and attention it deserves the fact is that throughout these 14 tracks the trio Boole prove themselves every bit as talented a composer and songwriter as Tom Shear, as the original version which, following on from "Totally Alone" gets this superb album off to a flying start so ably demonstrates.
Barkett's melodic but harsh vocals and undoubted talent for triumphantly anthemic 'hand in the air' choruses make tracks such as the excellent "Pheromones" instantly memorable winners.One stroke of genius is the track "America Inline" where voice samples, taken from various sources put together to form a continuous litany that is, in it's own way, compelling and almost hypnotic.
"Thanks For Playing (With US)" is also compelling listening but for very different reasons as it is inspired by the events of September 11th (this album was, in fact, released exactly one year later) and the war on terror. While many artists have taken a rather reflective line when dealing with these events Boole's gung-ho attitude, as demonstrated by the lines "Now it's time for you to pay/For fucking with the USA" leave the listener in no doubt where their loyalties lie. Whether these sentiments are meant or they're merely being ironic It's still impossible to listen to the crowd recordings from that day without raising the hairs on the back of your neck.
While many artists run out of steam as their album's progress that is not the case here as the quirky 80s feel of "Mr Roboto" (a title best taken with tongue firmly in cheek!), the trance/house touches of "Libertine" and the funky and street wise "Complicated" all see the band widening their scope in the search for new inspiration while maintaining the electro stance of the solid stomper that is "Everyday Is Halloween" or the live track "Suitor" which, starting with some excellent ethereal voices soon turns into another rip-roaring electro work-out, proof positive that Boole can cut it live with the best of them.
If there is any justice in the world then this album will be the one that sees Boole gain well-deserved fame and acclaim worldwide so do yourselves a favour and lend this album an ear, you'll not regret doing so.
