Archaos is a band from Bucharest, Romania. Their musical output began in 1993 and over the years have managed to incorporate elements of industrial, darkwave, techno, and ambient music, as well as traces of the Turkish influence embedded in the Romanian culture. Archaos conjures up disparate images ranging from the illuminated snowcaps of the Carpathian Mountains, black rose petals in the twilight, the shadows of linden trees and spider webs on the cold wet stone of a monastery, the lonely echoes bellowing from an abandoned coal mine, the buzz and clamor of steel mills and oil refineries, the futility of tiny robotic insects traversing the rugged sun-baked terrain, and the smoky entrails of the dance clubs of underground Bucharest.
The band consists of Dan Serbanescu on synths, guitar, bass, samplers, vocals, and oscillators, Radu Nicolescu on synths, guitar, bass, samplers, and oscillators, and Nicoletu Hanta on vocals. Though the pieces are primarily percussion driven, they garner more of an ambient quality, yet maintain massive dance club appeal. The best approximation of the band’s sound would be a combination of Front Line Assembly, Dead Can Dance, Future Sound Of London, and Aphex Twin. All the songs on Undead are great, but my favorites are the techno/ambient hybrids Bio-Mechanical and Red Dunes. Archaos deserves a broader international audience, especially in the U.S. I highly recommend that you check out their music at MP3.com.
