Nicola Kuperus and Adam Le Miller's Adult is a wild ride. They are like Kraftwerk and a humourless Devo sharing a crack-pipe with Chicks on Speed.
When the CD "Resuscitation" begins you aren't sure whether or not you want to be a part of Adult's painful electronic experience or run away from it. Adam Le Miller's electronics are so frigidly cold and emotionless you feel alienated. Nicola's frostbitten vocals are as cold and void of humanity as the machines that she and Adam operate. As if they detest you they lyrically and electronically intentionally push you away. It's as if they don't want anything human or organic contaminating the electronic world they've created, a world in which they are just two machines among the many machines they program. It's a world where electricity reigns supreme and all things organic are denied entry.
With songs like "Contagious", "Nausea", "Dispassionate Furniture" and "Human Wreck" and lines like "when I touch your skin I feel like I have to go and wash my hands" they do not conceal their obvious disdain for all things human and make being a human being sound like something distastefully fragile, vile, unclean and unwanted.
Adult throws up a thick frozen electric wall to keep all things organic out. They deliberately push you away, but the more they push you away the more you want to be a part of their harsh electronic outer limits. As you listen to "Resuscitation" your mind slowly chips away at Adult's ice wall and finally breaks it down. Once you accomplish this feat believe me you aren't prepared for what happens next. When the electric ice wall collapses you see coming straight at you a thick lava flow of bubbling blue-hot molten electricity and you realize that it's too late to try escaping from it. The flowing molten electricity consumes you scorching your brain cells and incinerating your humanity giving you full access to the world of Adult.
By the time the electric lava flow gets you to "Dispassionate Furniture" you are one with the Adult machine and this is confirmed when the mechanical drone of Nicola informs you that there is nothing else in existence now except you and Adult. When you reach the Devo-like distorted electronics of "Skinlike" electro whips lash what's left of your humanity into a delirious electrical malaria. You reach the CD's conclusion "Private Conversations" and you don't want this fiery ecstasy to end, you want to be suffocated in molten electricity, so you hit the play button on the remote and go through the entire set of icy-hot pleasure and pain all over again.
And that's the contradiction of Adult; the electronics are cold and harsh on one hand and molten incineration on the other. But once you are inside the electronic world of Adult you discover that they have a secret that they've been hiding behind an intimidating wall of electricity. Adult has a passionate electric heart that's warm and inviting, they are indeed human but for whatever reason they don't want people to know it.
Don't burn it, buy it. Let Resuscitation burn you.
