Unhappy gah.. selling/trading in old CDs/Records - your comments on this. (longish post)

Ok, so I have a few hundred records and about 3000 discs not to mention hundreds of cassettes. Been collecting for about 16 or 17 years now. ;p I dont know how many other people out there are music fiends, but some bands I just have to have everything of: Death In June, Current 93, Sol Invictus for example. THeir records are usually gorgeous with inserts, colored vinyl, etc. Then I snag the CD also for better play quality and yet more pictures, colored inserts, etc. *Yeah im a sucker but I only do it for these 3 World Serpent bands..*

At any rate, I find myself sometimes being a completist with bands in general. Like Project Pitchfork for example. I got into them years ago but ive picked up every damn release. Some bands I do this with and their new stuff just plain sucks.

Well, lately ive been finding myself strapped more and more for extra music cash so Ive been delving into the collection to trade stuff in for newer releases. Today for example I took a long look at my collection. XMTP discs from years ago that I havent listened to once. Old Pitchfor Cds. A stack of all of Puppy's 12"s on vinyl when I have them all on disc now. Old Zoth Leather Strip CDs and Technopolis comps. Some of this stuff I havent listened to in so long, it has a quarter inch of dust on it. Other things I had completely forgotten I had.

I tried giving a few things a listen to but its so damn dated I Just cant get into it. Now dont get me wrong; I have no quams with older albums from bands. I think Bites or Caustic Grip still hold up as amazing albums. But some things I just never ever see myself listening to. I just have it for the sake of having the complete CD setup.

So I got rid of a ton of stuff today and will probably be going through my collection more and more and getting rid of other items. Ironicly, I find myself now and again buying something that I havent heard in years (ie. I just picked up Greater Then One's G-Force disc. Havent had that in years; traded it in lol).

So my question to people is this: How many of you keep your older CDs that you really dont play much anymore? Or do you find yourself wanting to trade/sell them but dont? I absolutely hate that Ive collected some things the way I have. I no longer shell out the $$ for DIJ/C93 records like I used to. its ridiculous. But I also cant bring myself to part with them regardless. lol

Is this dumb? Anyway, im just curious how other people deal with their collections. I sure as hell know Im not the only one who has held a CD and debated keeping or selling it ;p

It's not dumb at all, I'm the same way...When I get really into a band I want everything they have...I keep everything too, I only tend to sell back the one-off things like promo's given to me, gifts I hated, etc...I usually tend to not spend as much either these days, times are tough...
