Thread: A.D.D. Top 20 & The State of Synthpop...

Talking A.D.D. Top 20 & The State of Synthpop...

It's nice to see Provision back in the Different Drum Top 20 Best Sellers this week at #17 - http://www.adifferentdrum.com/bestsell.php

Selling more records and gaining more exposure is always a nice treat for us.

We had an amazing show with one of our biggest influences The Human League
in Houston on Thursday in front of more than 3000 people.

It was an incredible night that exposed us to many new fans in the
mainstream, due to strong radio promotion by Houston biggest 80's station
    106.9 the Point.

Which brings me to "The State of Synthpop / 2003".

This massive 5 C.D. compilation will be an incredible testament to how big
    Synthpop has become.

    Here is a rundown...

In late 2002, A Different Drum planned together with several other synthpop
labels like Ninthwave Records, Nilaihah Records, Alfa Matrix, Cohaagen
Music, and many more to put together a huge collection of synthpop that
would present more than 80 different bands in one package. It was hoped that
this collection would serve as a sort of snapshot of the modern synthpop
scene, covering many styles, sounds, and moods. This huge library of music
could be both a tool to new synthpop fans, allowing them to explore a lot of
different artists with a single low-priced package, but could also be a
release worth collecting even for the die-hard synthpop fan who knows these
bands by heart. So forget the futile and time-consuming attempt to find and
download tracks by so many emerging synthpop bands on the internet, and just
pick up this 5-disc set, and the work will be done for you, all in
high-quality sound and fun, informative packaging. We hope you enjoy this
    "State of Synthpop" collection!

I tried to pre-order but the website kept timing out and giving me an error instead of placing my order. Hopefully that just means that so many people were trying to access the site today!

Can't wait to get a copy of this though, looks like a great collection.

i saw Dissonance, Intervox and Provision both on there... good exposure for our local artists... good stuff

weird that Iris isn't on there though

and i'm going to be anal and say that they didnt really include any of the bigger european synthpop artists.. so its not really a whole "state of synthpop" snapshot.. more of a snapshot of those labels that are a part of this deal

How could it be anything else?

Some of the bands you had in mind were probably invited, but declined to participate.

---Iris was originally to be on there, but in the end I think that it is something that they decided not to do. Maybe because they're not on ADD anymore, and maybe not.

Either way they are big enough to where it's not going to hurt them.

I am not an expert on this comp so don't quote me, but I believe that it was an open invite to all of the bands be on it.

Looking at the track listing you can see that it is not entirely comprised of just the bands on the labels involved. There are a lot of bands on it that are still unsigned, and Independent. Like my band Provision for example.

As far as "bigger european synthpop artists" it depends on who you consider to be big.

I see a ton of big european acts on this comp including...Wave In Head, Echo Image, Neuroactive, The Nine, Moulin Noir, and many others....

Now if you mean Big European as in VNV Nation, APOP, Icon Of Coil, Seabound, Colony 5, Covenant, De/Vision, etc...

I personaly wouldn't consider any of those bands Synthpop, nor would I say that they really need any help as far as getting their name out there to sell records as I so believe this comp is going to help a lot of Up and Coming bands do.

There are just my thoughts on the matter.

Regardless the comp has the most amazing line up of anything I have ever seen since the now defunct RAS DVA records released "The state of the Art" on 4 discs back in 1995 showcasing the biggest selection of Electronic Industrial and EBM acts in the world at that time. 54 tracks in all.

Looking back at some of the bands on it such as Mentallo & the Fixer, Leather Strip, Informatik, Lights of Euphoria, Pain Station, Fiction 8, Suicide Commando, NoxiousEmotion, Din Fiv, Abcess, Haujobb, KDC, Project Pitchfork, Croc Shop, Numb, Evil's Toy, and Wumpscut among others.

Look what it did for them. Most of those I just named became mainstays in clubs accross the world and a lot of them are the flagship bands for Metropolis Records.

What I am saying is in the long run the mileage and growth of the acts on "The state of Synthpop" is not to be downplayed.

It is going to be positive for everyone involved.

I am very excited, and cannot wait for this release to make the huge waves that i know it can and will.

I don't want to stir anything up in any way, but I'm curious to know...How come BNI isn't included??? Just wondering...

I doubt it was an intentional oversight - I'm sure Todd's contact list just doesn't have every synthpop band in existence, nor do the address books of the other labelfolks involved. I'm sure a lot of other acts got missed too, just by sheer numbers.

Hell, we're on the comp, and we were pretty out of the loop on the whole thing. Kristy emailed me and said she needed a track of ours for a comp, I sent her that, and I found out the title, release date, and tracklisting about two weeks ago.

I suppose the only way to know for sure is to ask Todd himself.

Todd rarely seems to make CD release annoucements here anyway.

I think this 5-disc comp. is very cool. Obviously there wasn't an open call type announcement, so some bands missed the opportunity to at least get considered. Still a great bargain with plenty o'tunes.

Speaking as a music enthusiast, with no biases:

I'm all about supporting the scene, buying cds, and going to shows, ect... but I think it's kind of facked up that who ever worked on this compilation was so oddly 'selective' with thier choices. I mean, I see quite a number of bands that I have NEVER heard of before prior to this post and noticed that not only Brand New Idol, but Blind Before Dawn, Platform One, the Mystic Underground, and others didn't make the 'final cut'.

Anyone who comes to this board knows those acts as they're supposed to be part of the scene too. Being that Todd, and the other label GM's involved do promotion here I am sure they know who these acts are as well.

    Where? Here on EGN?

    yea, me too.

So am I supposed to run out and buy this? I already have the 10 or so songs I like from this comp and not in the mood to spend hard earned money on acts I haven't heard of before.

Does me not buying this comp equate to me not supporting that so called said "scene" and being a hypocrite?

    Best of luck to all!
    XO, anna
I think it's obvious by the posted link that A.D.D. is paying for the pressing. Why would you even assume that I or my band is releasing this comp. I posted this thread to Promote it because I actively promote myself, regardless or if someone else intends to or not.

In regards to your "Final Cut" comment, I don't think there was one. It seems like everyone who was invited and submitted a track got on. Originally I was told it was to be a 4 disc set, and in the end it became a 5 disc set, that shows you that a lot more was added than originally planned.

To your "Where? Here on EGN comment.
    That was uncalled for.
You know that I meant it will be big for the Synthpop scene worldwide. Read it again. EGN only represents a very small part of the Synthpop scene in the world. Most of the bands on here are unsigned which is why they are here.
Because they don't have Label support or much in the way of getting their name out there because they are just starting out.

If you are not "in the mood to spend your hard earned money" on acts you've never heard before, then don't. This post was to get the word out, not for people to ¤¤¤¤¤ and whine about it, because they didn't get on it, or don't see a few of their favorite bands on it. There will be plenty of people who will buy this comp and many other comps that continue to be released every year.

No one said you will be a Hypocrite for not buying this comp or not supporting the scene. Only you can decide what you think you are.

I think it's funny that Ninthwave, October, Synthphony, ETC..., whoever, release comps and post the details here. But you don't see people ¤¤¤¤¤ing about who's not on it, and how they're not going to buy it.

If you don't want to support something then don't.
I will continue to support what I believe in.

Complaining and griping does nothing but bring others down and bring negative vibes upon a scene that is already struggling enough.

Instead, why not try to do something positive.
If you want to see a comp with the bands you mentioned above then talk to the bands, get them together, or release it yourself even.

    Anything but the Negativity please.

This is exactly why I hate message boards and on line groups.

Because people always have to ¤¤¤¤¤ and gripe and start ¤¤¤¤.

Why don't people have anything better to do than piss and moan.

I just want to say I am Sorry to everyone on EGN, really sorry that I even made the post for this Comp.

If I had known that this was going to bring such negative comments I never would have made this post.

for the record guys- BBD was totally oblivious to this compilation ,we're always interested in hearing about compilations, but being in England , we kinda get left in the dark. Ah well!
But I agree-bands like The Mystic Underground, BBD and Platform One are well established - how about giving us a shot next time big cheese record company execs?

So called artists who never change, why do you call yourself an artist again?
