Default Marc Almond ... the most cleverly, bitter and poignant lyricist ever in the scene?

I would have to say yes. The list of songs is endless .... example of the day:

Loving You, Hating Me lyrics by Marc Almond (Soft Cell)

    We've hit those depths again
    Playing black games again
    Black mellow lies
    And the narrowing of eyes
    Playing those games again
    You hold the reins again
But then I turned the card
And you know I hit hard

    Loving you, hating me
It's the other side of love
It's the side that you don't want to see

    Shaking your head that way
It's so true when they say
That love is a pain in the heart
    A pain that pulls apart
    I'm breaking rules again
    You're breaking hearts again
    Pretend to despise
When there's love in your eyes

    Loving you, hating me
It's the other side of love
It's the side that you don't want to see

    And I'm loving you
    And you're hating me
It's the other side of love
It's the other side of love

Default something's gotten hold of my heart

From the album: the stars we are

Something's gotten hold of my heart
Keeping my soul and my senses apart
    Something's gotten into my life
Cutting its way through my dreams like a knife
Turning me up, turning me down
Making me smile, making me frown

In a world that was war
I once lived in a time
    That was peace
    With no trouble at all
But then you came my way
    And a feeling I know
    Shook my heart
And made me want you to stay
    All of my nights
    And all of my days

    I wanna tell you now
Something's gotten hold of my hand
Dragging my soul to a beautiful land
    Something's invaded my night
Painting my sleep with a colour so bright
Changing the grey, changing the blue
Scarlet for me, scarlet for you

I've got to know if this is the real thing
I've got to know what's making my heart sing, oh yeah
A smile and I am lost for a lifetime
Each minute spent with you is the right time
Every hour (yeah) every day (yeah)
You touch me and my mind goes astray
And baby yeah, and baby yeah

Something's gotten hold of my hand
Dragging my soul to a beautiful land
    Something's gotten into my life
Cutting its way through my dreams like a knife
Turning me up, turning me down
Making me smile, making me frown

In a world that was war
I once lived in a time
    That was peace
    With no trouble at all

    But then you, you, you
    Came my way

    And a feeling I know
    Shook my heart
And made me want you to stay
    All of my nights
    And all of my days

Something's gotten hold of my heart
Keeping my soul and my senses apart
    Something's invaded my night
Painting my sleep with a colour so bright
Changing the grey, changing the blue
Scarlet for me, scarlet for you
Indulging inaccuracy I\'m picking apart my friend Lizzie
Throw another word on me and watch me hurl it back
    I know you! (I swear I do)
You\'re just like me- You\'re sipping a cup of pity
    Aw!
Did I forget to mention I\'m the centre of attention
In my universe my pain\'s my pension
    I know you! (I swear I do)
You\'re just like me-You\'re sipping a cup of dreams
    Yeah!
    Soul sloshing-don\'t shush me
Just listen to me -pretty little kitty in the sky
The bass of my laughter-my gut is the speaker
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
    Sweet is my surprise!

I hate to tell you this, Meg, but Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart wasn't written by Marc. According to the liner notes, it was written by Greenaway & Cook, whoever they are.

These My Dreams Are Yours, also from The Stars We Are

I'm a labyrinth of hopes and fears
Of tears of frustration and of anger
But if you can break through this wall
    And search amongst it all
    You'll find a man there
Who has a heart of love
Who is afraid of getting jaded
    Growing older
Who needs someone to love him
    Through life's winter
When the weather grows a little colder

    I know I have a darker side
    A cruel streak
    I'm selfish and demanding
    But I'm a man with a vision
It just takes a little understanding

    And in my hand
    The grains of sand
A thousand million moments of emotion
    Oh... these
Oh... these my dreams are yours

I'm a boat well rocked by wave and wind
    I've sinned, I'd win
    No prizes for perfection
But at best I've given all my all
    My shoulder for your tears
    And your protection
And if one day I don't wake up
Remember I was good upon reflection
And if they say I was a fool
    Be cool, but demand correction

    And in my hand
    The grains of sand
A thousand million moments of emotion
    Oh... these
Oh... these my dreams are yours

You can have my smile my tears
    My wishes here's a fortune
    To adorn you
I'll whisper in the night to you
Promise to adore and never scorn you
And as we grow a little older
Try to understand more of each other
I will be your golden eye
    Your master of illusion
    Or just your lover

    I'll be a dragonfly, a butterfly
A secret or a little lie to test you
    A song a verse a lullaby
A symphony once in a while
    To try and impress you
I'll take your heart to the limit
    The colours of my joy
    My tears to dress you
    But sometimes dear
    My heart's my own
I don't wish to exclude you or
    Distress you

    But darling...
    And in my hand
    The grains of sand
A thousand million moments of emotion
    Oh... these
Oh... these my dreams are yours

Marc Almond must be one of the very few artists I would actually like to meet personaly and have a long chat with. The guy has the heart of a true artist. He was born to be on stage.
He may not always have the greatest voice but his lyrics are just brilliant.
My favorite period of his musical work is from the days of the Mambas. I'm just sorry they only put 2 albums out. Torment & Toreros must be my favorite Almond release ever.

His auto-biography "Tainted Life" was a great book to read and I just couldn't put it down. Highly recomended.

A friend of mine has a website about Almond that is a real treasure box of information about all Marc's work: http://members.lycos.co.uk/urbanvelvet/

    Enjoy "Black Heart"...

    Playing
With little pictures that my mind sends
Counting the moments 'til my world ends
All I remembered are the bad times
And its chewing away at my insides

    When you looked that way
Oh I knew you wanted to hurt
You killed all of my dreams
    With your black, black heart

    Night creeps
Its wicked way just like a spider
    Stealing, the feelings that hide
    Black heart and wild
You were so like an angry child

    When you looked that way
Oh I knew you wanted to hurt
You killed all of my dreams
    With your black, black heart

    Pushing
    Your icy fingers always crushing
    Your jealous mind so disapproving
You laughed at all my ideas
    And encouraged all my fears

    When you looked that way
Oh I knew you wanted to hurt
You killed all of my dreams
    With your black, black heart

    Leave me alone
    Stop pushing at me
    You got your revenge
For the love that I lent
    You're destroying my mind
    You're destroying my soul
    Black heart

I adore Marc Almond's music....especially 'The French Album', 'A Woman's Story' and the live album, 'Twelve Years of Tears'.

Apparently Soft Cell is playing here in Southern California soon and I'll definitely make a point to see them.

Nick Cave also covered "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart"...and as for who Gene Pitney is...(he's featured on the version with Marc, but also did the original version)

and Marc Almond wrote "Say Hello Wave Goodbye" and was recently covered by David Gray...

Just thought y'all would like to know

My recent favorite besides Tears Run Rings is:

    I Who Never

    I've destroyed another love
Have to stamp out every good that touches me
In and out of my heart
Crawls the ugly worm of jealousy
    Born from insecurity
Never meant to drive you away
    I, guilty of all crimes
Saw myself in another light today

    I who never
    I who never

Outside in the sun hazed street
Is an empty parade of sinking hearts
Will I see your ragged head
Among those in search of one fast kiss
    My searching heart joins those
Goes out to take your hand
You were once a part of this
    My searching heart joins those
Goes out to take your hand
You were once a part of this

    I who never
    I who never

    Sat sad by silent phone
Changed my number forgot to tell the world
Get drunk get dead and gone
You were such a special one to me
How can I with so much
    Really have nothing at all
How can I with so much
    Really have nothing at all

    I who never
    I who never

    Desperate, irrational
    Just another face another window
I would prowl the city streets
    Searching for your signs
    Fuelled by sweeter times
This could even make me pray
I who never ever ever prays
This could even make me pray
I who never ever ever prays

    I who never
    I who never

Wow...I haven't checked the boards in a couple of days, and I find that you guys are discussing one of my all-time favorite musical artists!

Marc Almond IS an incredible lyricist. Among my favorites of all time, if not my absolute favorite.

I still have to pick up the new Soft Cell album, as well as the tickets to the show here in LA.

Here's one of my favorites, "Madame de la Luna" from "Enchanted."

She's in my veins, Gold in my veins
She is my pain and my joy.
Time and again, Waxing or waning
I go insane for La Luna
    Madame de la Luna.

    When she is sleepy
    She's creepy, mysterious and wicked.
    When she is full
She is full of promise and joy.
Beaming her smile all the while
    Across heaven's horizons.
Weaving her dreams into hearts of lonely boys.

But when I'm under the moon with you
    I'm in heaven.
When I'm under the moon with you
    I'm in heaven.

    She'll bring out the killer
    Bring out the lover.
    She'll bring out the killer
    Bring out the lover.

She loves a tyrant, a pirate, a dreamer,
    a crook and a liar.
A joker, a trickster, romancer, a dancer and fool.
Cold as the frost, but in her heart is a fire.
Hanging around the dark throat of the night
    like a jewel.

But when I'm under the moon with you
    I'm in heaven.
When I'm under the moon with you
    I'm in heaven.

    Moon, moon, Delirious moon
Alone in the blue like a silver balloon
    Moon, moon, Delirious moon
    Dancing a waltz to a lunatic's tune.
Madame de la Luna, Bewitching is she
    I cannot live without her.
    She's scattering stars,
    Dancing with Mars
Cheek to cheek with La Luna
Cheek to cheek with La Luna.

    Madame de la Luna
She sings as she brings in the harvest.
    She pulls out her tongue
    at the cruel Ethiopian sun.
    When she's hiding the dark
    can bring a terrible vengeance
    A pounce in the shadows
a moment alone with a gun.

Adrift in a sea of indigo silk
    Passionate like an Arabian torch
Enticing two lovers to jump off a bridge
Changing the man into the wolf.

    Sometimes she's a terrible flirt
    Causing mischief and mayhem
    Wherever she can.
Sometimes she's a woman that hurts
    Sometimes she is a man.

Encouraging drunks to sing course serenades
Lighting the way for the young renegades.

But when I'm under the moon with you
    I'm in heaven.
When I'm under the moon with you
    I'm in heaven.

She says better times are gonna come soon
Better times are gonna come soon
Better times are gonna come soon
    Trust in the moon
    Trust in the moon.

    La Luna.

I'll drop another one, which really impressed me the first time I heard it (didn't put this one the first time because I would have to replace characters in all the 'sinfull phorbiden words' and I had no time for that).
On another thing, there's this track on a compilation I laid my hands on yesterday, where Marc almond sings. It's not really a typical Almond track, but it's excelent stuff. It's "Soul on Soul" by System F feat. Marc Almond, and I got it from the "Advanced Electronics" compilation from the DAC Charts.
There's also another real sweet song called "Please Stay" by some band called Mekon, where Marc sings. I've heard the Royksopp remix, and I really like it (Royksopp make nice stuff).

    Enjoy "Catch a Fallen Star"...

    Black rings round your eyes
    And you're spewing your lies
That you know is your old routine
    Spilling your drink
    With a nudge and wink
As you boast about people you've been
    Smoking your cigarette
    Down to the butt
And your teeth are as black as the tar
    You tell them at sex
You're a stud in the bed
As you hang for your life on the bar
And you see your own peak
On the top of the mountain
Of bodies you trod on to get there
Sh1t on me, ¤¤¤¤ on her
Shi1 on you in the end
And they won't even lend you the bus fare
Now you're boring the pants off
    The tart on the dance-floor
As you tell her the person you once were
She just sees you as trash
But she creams at the cash
That you might pay just to grope her

And this town is a potpourri of disease
Can you smell the herpes from the sİum-sucking fuİks
That hang around the same suckers each mid-night
    You were being your photo
    And spouting your promo
    Flicking back your limp quiff
That's as limp as your d1ck
    Irritating your greedy cross-eyed sight
Oh Christ and you're greasing up now
    To the creepy old cow
That would sell out your mother and besides
    Your sell-out assured
    You were always a whor3
And you've always been taken for long rides
At the smell of the bribe
    You go jelly inside
As you step up the gold ladder to big time
Kick them on the way up, kick you on the way down
And you'll need them all again in good time
Your friend is the "yes" man
    Who sits by your side
With his hand in your pocket all the time
    And he's messing your head
Tries to get you in bed
    Well it's all masturbat1on of a kind

    What you earn, heaven knows
It goes straight up your nose
And you strangle your health in the end
    And you're blinded by bull
    And you've really been full
And it's driving you straight round the bend
And you're told that a smile is so worth your while
Its what "yes" men call diplomacy
    It'll get you the goal
    But while losing the soul
    You're forgetting the quality
And you heave on your drink
    As you're starting to think
That all that shines may not be lamè
    But a cheap substitute
    That'll give you the boot
You're just a stiff at a funeral party
Where you slouch on the bar
With your arm in the beer
    Wearing yesterday's mascara today
And it runs when you cry about living a lie
And the lie's starting to fade away
    Fade away

    Fade away

    Fade away[/b]
I like everything I've heard so far by Royksopp. That's another cd I've been meaning to pick up.

This is such a great thread!

I've been inspired to play my Marc Almond and Soft Cell cd's since I first saw it! I'm listening to The Stars We Are now.

Enjoy "Only the Moment" from this cd:

    The clock on the wall
    Has just told you
    Your hour has come.
And you know those that God loves
    Die young.

    But remember
    There is never forever
    Only the moment.
    There is never forever
    Only the moment.

    You're thinking too much
About who will think badly of you
    You throw away chances
    Let love pass you by.

    But remember
    There is never forever
    Only the moment.
    There is never forever
    Only the moment.

    Don't be afraid
Of the dark of the night
    Just reach for your feelings
    Let your mood tell you
    You're making the right move.
    The days fade away
    And before you can say
I wish I'd made all the right moves
    It's too late.

    With guilt on your shoulder
    And fear in your heart
    You're bedevilled by angels
    Belittled by fools.

    But remember
    There is never forever
    Only the moment.
    There is never forever
    Only the moment.

THe Jaques Brel songs he covers are great for his dramatic, theatrical style - he is so full of passion. I met him at the Roxy Club in NY 12 years ago and had a long discussion with him and held hands with him - he kissed me on the cheek, very sweet guy, obviously he knew I was a cool girl since I was there with my gay friend at a gay club What a nice guy, nobody else recognized him - he is so small too. I like "Litany for a Return"

    My love
    My heart
    My sweet, oh
    My sky
    My fire
    My heat, oh
    My work
    My spring
    My veil
    My honey
    My bomb
    My grail
    My gate
    My gold
    My thrown, oh
    My stock
    My rock
    My stone, oh
    My night
    My thirst
    My hunger
    My day
    My bread
    My water
    My sail
    My wave
    My guide
    My way
    My blood
    My strength
    My fever
    My ray
    My song
    My love
    My wine
    My joy
    My dawn
    My life
    My faith
    My cry
    My love
    My heart
    My sweet, oh
    My sky
    My fire
    My heat, oh
    My body
    My flesh
    My yearning
    All this, now you're returning
and used this song in some auditions for the stage, where people were like 'what is that song?!' good reaction.

I just came from the Soft Cell concert 12 hours ago and it was great. THey were at a club full of only 1000 people or so. It was a total reunion night. ANd Marc's voice is so awesome and not a single "slow" or "Boring" moment went by--what a great performer.

Soft Cell were always one of thoses bands that Influenced BNI and Joy Machine. Our lyrics our quirkiness everything we did had been subtly modeled from Soft Cell in a very subconcious level. Wasn't till last night how much I had missed seeing Soft Cell by being a few years too young to see these new wave bands. So for me I was warped back 19 years for 2 hours and to me it was like I was that 15 year old kid that was allowed into a 21 and over bar.

I just wanted to add that the show last night had to be one of the top 5 shows I think I have ever gone to. Even the new material was wicked live. If you have a chance to see them or are hemming and hawwing about going, just go! Would you not go see the smiths if they reunited for a show, or any band that broke up before your time? That's the caliber of band that Soft Cell was and live they are just phenominal.

The Roxy where we saw them erupted when they played their hits. Plus Marc was so good with the crowd, he had us sing parts to the songs with him sitting on stage commenting how good a crowd were were. All of the hits were true to the originals, I don't think they did much but dig out the old tapes they used back in the 80's and got them on CD or DAT. When Say Hello, Wave Goodbye came on the crowd just lost it, it was extremely emotional with couples dancing and singing to each other. I found that extremely endearing.

So even if you only know tainted love, or maybe you have heard sex dwarf or memorabilia a few times, it would still be worth your while to go.
