Glass Tiger and the Outfield. Two HUGE favorites of my childhood I forgot all about.

Rush, Yes, Asia, Toto, Kansas, Styx, etc..... are probably why I wanted to learn how to play keyboards well. I loved new wave but we're not talking "Chops Intensive" stuff there.

I was a big Ozzie and Scorpions fan as well. "Your Love" by the Outfield is such a great song. I never checked out the rest of the album, but I seem to remember that there was a second single released...

    Hey Regan:

For me it was "The Perfect Kiss" I became fanatical about all things NewOrder.
\"Man, you go through life, you try to be nice to people, you struggle against the urge to punch ‘em in the face, and for what?! For some pimply little puke to treat you like dirt. Well I’m better than dirt ... well most kinds of dirt. I mean, not that fancy, store-bought dirt. That stuff’s loaded with nutrients. I can’t compete with that.\"

Ooh. The Outfield. I still have one of their tapes lying around.. the one with the wierd symbols.. and Babylon on it. Can't remember what it's called. Btw, many of those monsters o rock listed above are currently touring the bar scene - together! Although I guess it's been postponed, because the lead singer of Ratt just died

dayo.. (was a new wave chick, but can appreciate the occasional Warrant or Ratt song)

Really? He died? I'm going to have to dig out my Ratt Cd and play "Round & Round" and then I'll play "Round & Round" by New Order.

As far as the raltinship thing goes...

I agree with everyone that is saying that compromise is the key. I also think that, though it is not the ideal situation, the person should at least just be really into music period. That way the person can at least respect your enthusiasm.

I just got out of a relationship that I was in for 3 years. She was into electronic music but stuff like Fat Boy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, Crystal Method, Moby etc. She would say that my music was too dark or the type of stuff you hear in gay clubs.

She never got into my music but she was very familiar with the bands that I listened to. Anytime we would go to a music store she would get my attention if she saw something she knew I liked. She always blew me away at how well she knew the bands that I listened to. Even if she went by herself she would later tell me stuff like ‘hey, they had a VNV Nation CD that I don’t think you have’ etc. She also had a good handle of stuff that she listened to that she thought I might like. As far as clubs went, she was quite willing to go to the clubs I preferred as well as going to clubs she preferred going to.

I think because she was so into music and really cared about me, she could respect my musical taste even though it wasn’t her own.

If i'm remembering correctly, the article stated he died of Aids, probably received from a shared needle.

I've never dated anyone who was into Synthpop, Electro/EBM, or Industrial. Anything that I was into.

But I always seem to get them into it.

My Ex-Fiance was into Punk Rock, and Goth when I met her. I turned her Onto Progressive Dance, Synthpop, Industrial Dance, all kinds of new stuff. I made her Compilation Tapes to listen too, and before long she knew the bands and was borrowing all of my C.D.'s and tapes.

We split up, but the New Guy she's with was into Country and Rock. Now she has him listening to all the stuff I turned her onto.
She still asks me what's new and Hot, and what she should check out. She says I turned her Life around when it comes to her Music Tastes.

My wife Katie, Similar Story. She's was into a lot of Female stuff - Annie Lennox, Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos. But She's also Hevily into David Bowie & Iggy Pop, the Pixies, etc....

I Turned her onto all the stuff I listen to, and she Even loves bands that I don't really like. But are still popular. Like VNV Nation.

But she was into Book Of Love, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and the Eurythmics, so it wasn't hard to get her to listen to my type of music.

I don't believe that a relationship should be based on your Music Preference, but I will admit that it does help.

being an old-as-dirt new wave/goth/new romantic from the first half of the 80's, i've had this conundrum for years (until recently, now that i'm hitched).

i found it very hard to have a relationship with anybody that wasn't at least somewhat into some kind of 'alternative' music. if she liked top 40, i just couldn't handle it.

which begs the question: how'd i screw up with that one girl that liked most of what i did but liked moby, too? (i respect mobys talent, i just don't like his music)

You know it's a funny thing ... I never really got into the metal or hard rock stuff when I first started my musical appreciation at the tender age of 6 years old ... I was nuts about the electronic eurodisco which was popular at the time (Giorgio Moroder produced stuff mainly) ... and I did get into a lot of rock acts that used the synthesizer, perhaps Styx and Steve Miller Band are the best examples of these. Fly like an Eagle is STILL an awesome song!

But as the 80's arrived, disco died, to be replaced by New Wave. The Human League was for me the one band which changed it all for me, with "Don't You Want Me". Perhaps that one song defined my whole musical existence.

Another little anecdote with my girlfriend ... I had gotten "Freezepop Forever" for myself for christmas. Now Beverly has quite a singing voice on her (she may yet appear on some of my future music!) but when she listened to Freezepop, she says, "Bobby, PLEASE don't make me sing like that!" ... I told her she had no worries. While I am nuts about Freezepop, it's not the sort of musical style I would emulate in my own stuff.

It is all perfectly normal. If you have something in common it may last longer.
