Thread: What are your favorite DM B-Side/Extra Tracks?

Question What are your favorite DM B-Side/Extra Tracks?

I spent the evening making CD-Rs for my CD player at work, and began working on a CD compliation of various DM B-side & exra tracks from singles.

I probably only have about 20 of their CD singles, so I'm certain to be missing quite a few....sorry, getting off on a tangent there.

Anyway, a lot of the earlier B-sides/extra tracks are sonically unusual, but it seems the tracks, circa Violator to the present, included with singles are really amazing. I believe many could have been singles themselves, for example:

    "Dangerous" B-side of "Personal Jesus"
"Sea of Sin (Tonal Mix)" extra track from "World In My Eyes"
"Happiest Girl (Jack Mix)" extra track from "World In My Eyes"
"Surrender" extra track from "Only When I Lose Myself"

That is, of course, an abbreviated list, but you grasp the concept. Those are some of my favorite tracks. It makes me curious about the whole selection process of what will, and will not be included on the album.

Yeah, the Best B-Sides thread I started last month of the month before kinda went into the best Depeche Mode B-Sides. My favorites are:

#1 -> Sea of Sin ...amazing song.

    Dangerous
    Happiest Girl
    Surrender
    My Joy

Yeah, I've also wondered why some amazing B-Sides didn't make the album. Only reasons I can think of are:

    1) They were written after the album release (although this doesn't apply to many. But Distain!'s Tears of Joy single had 2 B-Sides written especially for it, "She's Gone" and "No Excuse", both great songs)

    2) The artists felt for some reason the song didn't fit the flow/theme of the album.

Anyway, I almost put some remixes of Depeche Mode here, but they're not quite B-Sides. I'm gonna start that thread now.

I'm totally with you guys with the Violator era B-sides! Those songs were equally as good as the singles they were released on. Martin Gore was definately at the top of his game during that time period.

I have yet to pick up any CD singles for SOFAD. Any interesting B-sides there at all?

Since "Surrender" was released with "Only When I Lose Myself", my guess is that it was not written in time for Ultra. However, I sometimes wonder if "Only When I Lose Myself" should have been the B-side for "Surrender".

Remarkable that "Dangerous" is almost a constant with the listeners. It is such a strong song. I would have been proud to write it myself. Definitely single material.

Agreed - Dangerous is at the very least Album Material. It would have gone so nicely as a replacement to Blue Dress, which seems to really make the end of violator lose pace a bit. But no complaints

I think I'd have to agree about "Dangerous", although sometimes when I listen to it I get kinda bored with that long instrumental part in the middle [I'm talking about the sensual mix]. I also figured "Happiest Girl" would be on the top of a lot of people's lists.

I also think "Breathing in Fumes" is kinda cool, but in a funny sort of way. it makes me crack a smile at a few points in the song.

I thought I was gonna be the only one to say that "Set Me Free (Remotivate Me)" is the best one of all. I just think it's an all-around perfect song. I've even wanted to cover it a few times.

Dangerous, Stjarna, Sea of Sin, Memphisto, Flexible, and Oberkorn.

But Not Tonight would have been my favorite B-side had they not included it on Black Celebration.

Mine would be "Sea of Sin".
Not only is it my favorite Depeche Mode B-side, it's also my favorite DM song!
Since the first time I heard it on the 12" single, I've been hooked. Definately a gem on its own.
