Trance explaination please

Ok I have been trying to get into trance alot recently. But I am having some difficulties. Can someone fill me in on who the groundbreakers of trance are and a little bit of the history and background of this sub-genre. It seems to me that alot of the trance songs I am hearing are electronic songs that are not fully developed. Is there such a thing as melodic trance? I like alot of th elements of the music but I know I am missing something. Maybe I am just listening to "bad" trance. Who can help me out here?

I'M NOT SURE THE WHOLE BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF TRANCE MUSIC. AND YES THERE IS A LOT OF BAD TRANCE OUT THERE. I HAD TO LISTEN TO IT AND LISTEN TO AS MANY DIFFERENT DJ'S AS I COULD. THE ONLY THING I CAN TELL YOU IS TO KEEP LISTENING AROUND UNTIL YOU FIND ONE THAT CAN TOUCH YOUR SOUL. AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT IT CAN DO FOR ME. sorry to change the subject for a second....but where is this quote from? i know i've heard it before, and it's bothering me because i can't remember from where....

anyways, i believe there's another thread about this, though i'm not a huge trance fan, so i can't help too much.

paul oakenfold comes to mind....

i'm also a huge fan of robert miles. i think he's trance. his first album, dreamland, is worth checking out.

Paul Van Dyk's "The Politics of Dancing" is a great compilation cd of today's best trance.

Many of the new EBM crossover bands are heavily influenced by epic trance. Take VNV Nation's "Beloved" for example, epic trance with vocals. Or the new Icon of Coil album, also trance.

really, if you want to get into trance.. go to any music store and go to the various dance section.. most stores these days have a way for you to listen to cds.. just go and listen to some of those cds.. it will open your ears to a whole world of music.

Audiogalaxy is miles above what any store in my local area would ever consider carrying. I download from there, if I like, I'll buy it from Amazon.com or the record label. Recommended a fast connection though.

Tranceaddict.com has some trance mix sets to check out as well, they are a very good trance resource on the net. They're not very good for psytrance though. For psytrance, go here.

The eurodance site reviews a lot of vocal trance/ trance now since euro died out. Dancevibes is a site dedicated to the Belgium dance scene.. Milk Inc, Lasgo, Ian Van Dahl, Kate Ryan, Dee Dee, La Luna, Sylver, Whyzer, etc. Also has info on the popular group, Lords of Acid, etc.

Trance basically evolved from German Techno, using the rolling bass and sizzling keyboards of techno to give the music a hypnotic flowing effect, yet retaining all the driving, pulsating energy of it's true techno roots. Attributes: synth/sample-driving, pounding basslines, complex cyber-sounding keyboards, usually instrumental. 128 to 150 BPM.

Of course thats just the tip of the iceburg of the Trance world. I've been listening to it for quite some time now and am still learning things. Heh. Really not like Synthpop where you can basically learn all there is to know about the scene in a day. Personal favorites are Progressive/Hard Trance and Vocal Trance, things like: Blank & Jones, Cosmic Gate, Antiloop, ATB, Christopher Lawrence, Ferry Corsten, Kai Tracid, Alice DeeJay, Oakie, Push/M.I.K.E.

The first time I heard Armin van Buuren remix of Rapture, I was at a club - my friend who DJ's there knew I love AvB, and he knew I liked Rapture. He said he had a surprise for me, and this was it - it was a white label promo copy that he had just received. I was standing in front of the speakers, just listening, and was just totally blown away. Wow - what a track. I need to get the AvB edit video now!!

PvD mix is on a totally different level, of its own - major props to these guys for the music they create.... just amazing.

Video is at Apipe's last I checked. That's where I got it from. I'm still looking for a good Peer to Peer for downloading Dance/Trance videos. Morpheus was ok, but basically only had really popular stuff like Alice D, Fragma & Dune.

The video I want a lot is the CJ Stone one.

All you could ever want to know about electronic music!! Seriously take a look at this link. It defines dozens and dozens of genres... maps their relations from ebm to nrg to idm to progressive house. It also provides short audio clips that will load automtically to give you a fairly accurate idea of what any genre would sound like.

I cant tell you how great this website... you must see it... for yourself. (sorry couldnt help it)
