    Sound Is Synthpop Alive?

Well there is the Is Synthpop Dead? thread that was pretty thick with both negative and positive spins on the matter. Thought there ought to be a converse thread to let anyone about speak out.

So if you are Synthpop, or like Synthpop or want to shout out its alive... please do so for all to hear!

    Apparently, it is alive.

If you bend a little and go outside of what I believe are somewhat narrow definition boundaries.

Honestly, you don't have to bend far. It is all perception and yes T.A.T.U is synthpop"ish" in IMO.

OK. Well, since you asked ;-) ...

One night during the spring of 2008 I starting looking up some of my favorite synthpop bands from the 80s on YouTube. I spent several hours watching videos of Gary Numan, Ultravox, Depeche Mode, The Human League, and many others. I had a glorious time! I was really struck by many of the user comments on these videos - things like "Why aren't people making music like this anymore?" or "I'm so sick of modern dance music with mind-numbingly repetitive loops, lyrics (if any) reduced to only the hook" etc., etc.

Well, the search term "synthpop" also brought to my attention a video called "Synthpop is dead" which turned out to be quite funny and entertaining actually. But, of course, I totally disagreed with its central message. I said to myself, out loud, "No, it's not. Synthpop's alive!" That's when the idea came to post a video response - but to really get my point across I wanted to sing it instead of speak it - in synthpop / new wave style! It was quite a challenge -- but really fun to do!

So, to make a long story short, my answer is yes, synthpop is most definitely alive. There are a lot of modern synthpop bands putting out great new material. Plus quite a few legendary groups from the 80s are putting out new albums and touring again. Things are looking great for 2011!

If anyone is interested, last week I released an album called "Synthpop's Alive" inspired by the many positive comments and emails I received in reaction to the video. At the moment it is available as a digital download only. A few tracks from the album can be heard at MySpace, but I plan to make the full album available for listening at some place like SoundCloud or Bandcamp (haven't decided yet). I also posted a new version of the video on YouTube using the digital release version of the song (which I think is MUCH better):

    Synthpop's Alive (Remix)

Anyway, I'd really like to thank you for some of the nice comments in this thread. It made my day!

    Cheers.

    Default Very Cool!

Hey there, nice "second" version of that song!

Very cool of you to come out and share the story behind the videos. Take a look around and feel free to create an artist account and put up some of your music or just chime in on any other threads, synthpop or otherwise . Also, browse the Legacy Artist sections: loads of great music in there too.

Cheers and welcome to the Electrogarden.

Wow, guess you saw this and popped.
    That's great!

Thanks for sharing the motivation and history on that video and song. I still play it every so often because it sounds as if you are really passionate about saying "Syntpop's Alive!!!" and I enjoy hearing that.

    Welcome to this place.

Thank you, Electro Garden. I'm very much looking forward to "a walk in the garden" :-) I'm a bit overwhelmed with work at the moment because of the album release, but I expect things to calm down soon (probably sooner than I'd like LOL) ... at which time I will see about setting up a profile. Cheers.
