Playing Samples Live

Greetings! I've been searching for answers to no avail, this seems like the right place for a solid answer.

I need a better way to play samples live (ex. movie quotes). Right now, I am playing the mp3 files off of my ipod which is ran through a mixer and out to my speakers.

The ipod is unreliable, it has a touch delay and tends to go into hibernaton in the middle of a song. I need a device/instrument that will allow me to take short mp3 files from my computer and be able to play them live with the touch of a button, clean and precise.

Do you have any suggestions for hardware, without me having to set up my entire computer on the stage..?

Of course the best solution is a notebook.

Any sampler is gonna run you atleast $400.

The Korg esx-1 has served me well in this capacity but you might need more memory than it offers depending on what you're trying to do.

live? isnt all that kind of music
on tapes or prerecorded in the studio?
