    Default IP address question

I have a pal who is being harrassed by someone posting threats in her LiveJournal. She wants to know if there is a way to do a search on someone's identity by using their IP address. (I've often wondered myself.) Is this possible? If so, how?
Seems like a strange place to post this query, but you're all more well-versed at computer stuff than I.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jamie

Yes, you can figure out where the computer is located at based upon the IP address, but I don't know how the tracking is done, exactly. However, if someone is behind a router or firewall this makes it more difficult because the IP address is hidden in those cases. Can your friend just report the harassment to the web admin?

The IP won't be hidden, the firewall might block ICMP, or even incoming TCP and UDP ports, but the real IP is in front of that, their NATed IPs are behind it, and of no importance. It's the frontside IP that the upstream provider allocates via DHCP or static that counts. That's the one that initiates the TCP port 80 (HTTP) request.

If you don't have the IP, you can notify LiveJournal to check their logs for the poster. If you have the IP address, you can do a "whois" at www.arin.net, just type it in, it will tell you the provider and you can take it from there...

You can easily track someone by using their IP address Jamie...Most times though you'll run into a small problem...Usually, the IP address is not linked to the person your lookling for...By that, I simply mean they are more than likely using someone else's computer, or even have multiple IP accounts...

It's defeinately worth it though to try and find out the person who's doing it...You know even one more suggestion would be to get in contact with the Live Journal admins, and see if they can help you in finding the person's identity...By alerting to them the person is making threats maybe they can step in and help to take action...

Best of luck to you and your friend Jamie

Unless user negotiated a packet with you, you can't know their ip addresses. IP address pools usually don't get bought out so placement of most real ip addresses are stable. There are many Unix tools that can scan the latest CO and placement of IPs in ISPs. You can't only trace the IP addresses to the nearest CO or ISP. Also, it is easy to run a virtual sessions within a session.

Electro is House music. If you don\'t like House music, please don\'t put down Electro, because it is trendy to say it. It might suprise you that Electro and House music were invented by Gay Black Americans in the mid 80s. They weren\'t invented by the beatless people who like to coin new trendy phrases.

I am so tired of \"I want to be Depeche Mode or Erasure for the last 25 years.\" I hope I am not the only one. 25 years is a quarter of century and about a 1/3 of human life. If a person spends a 1/3 of his or her life having the same tastes, I don\'t know if that person acquired enough information to have an interesting life or has a problem understanding he or she is no longer a teenager.

So called artists who never change, why do you call yourself an artist again?

Why, certainly. But that eliminates all of the fun that comes with harrassing someone back!

Also, in livejournal, under manage, then info, down a bit you'll see: Log IP addresses of people replying? select always. this will get you the ip that they're using to post with.
