Let's get back to talking about Chicharones.

There's this cuban restuarant in my area that actually puts a backet of these babies at your table (instead of bread) before a meal. mmmmm....

Oh no. That would definitely spoil my dinner. Ha ha ha. I am powerless against the chicharones!!

I think you mentioned earlier you are from a Cuban family too. Another evil food is the Cubano sandwich. I never get to sample much Cuban food because whenever I'm in a Cuban restaurant, I inevitably get that sandwich. Something about having it flattened by those irons that makes it even more delicious!!

lol. you know, if you buy some chicharones to go, they put them in a small brown paper bag. By the time you reach your destination, the paper bag has this translucent look to it.

DJ, u need to come out to Jersey one say. We'll feast on Cuban sandwiches and Chicharones.

Sounds wonderful (and yummy)!! What part of Jersey are you from? I can imagine what the paper bags look like once home because those things are greasy. Delicioso!!! Since you've got me sitting here dreaming of Latin food another favorite dish of mine is Matahambre which I get at this little Uruguayan restaurant in Queens. The translation is Hunger Killer (which always amuses me). Its basically a slice of pork (or veal) that is stuffed with a variety of things like egg and spinach. They stuff the meat while its still a whole roast so when you slice it, there is a little section of the stuffing in the center of the slice. Very nice presentation with the swirl of colors inside the slice and they serve it with papas Rusas which I guess is Russian potato salad. Similar to our potato salad in taste except it has more of a whipped consistency. (Does this sound about right, Marion or are they making this up at that restaurant?).

I'm from a town called West Orange. It's near Newark. I spend most of my time in the town where I'm from originally though, Union City. It's right by Hoboken. There's a main street there with a bunch of different yummy restaurants.

The Matahambre sounds awesome. I have to see if there are any Uruguayan restaurants in this area so i can check it out. Great, like I needed you to introduce me to new artery clogging delicacies

Oh, so you are quite close to the city then. I know exactly where Union City is although I've only gone through it when I'm returning to the city by bus. I definitely noticed a lot of restaurants along the strip that the bus goes along. I was very surprised about their being a Uruguayan restaurant in Queens too which is why I had to eat there. You certainly don't see many Uruguayan businesses but Queens has everything with its high immigrant population which is a real plus if you like to try different foods. Next stop is a Salvadoreno restaurant which I've never tried.

    Ditto.

Beccah and I used to dine out atleast 5/7 nights a week when we were both working full time and living like DINC YUPPIES. I've travelled to most of the major US cities and some out of the country. By a large stretch Chicago has the best variety and QUALITY of Ethnic restaurants I've ever experienced. NY, SF, and LA are close seconds ...

Yeah, one of my fave lines is anything which is fun is illegal, immoral, or fattening. If not one of those, it's expensive!
