Is it just me or is it the server that electrogarden.com is sitting on very slow? I know that there is usually no more than 10-20 users on this site at one time so that can't be it. It's just about 3 am here on the west coast and im getting some extremely high pings from this this site. And whois is not even showing that the site exists.
I have experienced this in the past and it's doing it again. Is this normal for this site???

I think is because the scripts on this board appears to be rather heavy! On most boards you just get the message and other text data. On this board however, you have all the pictures(I certainly hope the don`t store the actual pictures in the database!), ratings, links to journals(which the script have to check whether exists or not) etc.

Just look at the information at the bottom of the page:

Page generated in 0.1330700 seconds (-25.81% PHP | 125.81% MySQL) with 43 queries.

If you have to really send 43!!!!!!!!!! queries to a MySQL database server, that really can cover much of it! MySQL is a free and easy database server, that unfortunantly works poorly when a lot of users are on the site. And I think that 43 queries is excessive on a board that don`t have "threaded" showing!

I get it too around 11pm and after that until around 4am then it's rocket fast...Kinda bums me out to as it's usually the prime time I'm on here these days...

When you write a message on these boards, the messages are stored in a database, an application that runs beside the actual webserver. To get the data to the web browser, the program that sends the htmlcode has to obtain the data from the database, and each time the program/script obtains data for the databasen, it sends a query. Each query takes extra time. On the bottom of each page you can see how long the page took to be put together and the MySQL part i the actual time it takes to send queries.

To take a look at my favourite board, look here:

http://vg.transact.no

And the "it`s fine with me, so then I don`t care", typical of "moderatarna" isn`t it?

OK thank you, I almost understood that.

No, just another sterotype. Have you lived in Sweden? What do you know about our politics, about my party?

And I didnīt say that I donīt care, I just wanted to inform you that I didnīt have any problem with the forum, not that I didnīt care if everybody else had problems!

First, It will take to long to explain every operation on this site. To make it short, in my opinion this board is more complex than it needs to be, and that slows the whole thing down.

When it comes to politics, that was mean`t as a kind of joke. I live in Norway quite close to Sweden and have watched swedish television all my life, so I know quite a bit about the country. "Moderatarna" is just about the same thing at the norwegian party "Høyre", only a tad more extreme.

PHP can be slow but i think its a bandwidth probelmo at the minute...oi you guys calm down .....its the bandwidth and the amount of users which is lowing this place down ......and bandwidth must cost an arm and a leg for this place...!!

I can't write messages at home anylonger. I have to wait until I get to work. My connection is as good at home as at work (that is tip top :) ) but my computer can't take it at home. It is a bit old (500 MH, 0.5 GB ram) but I have no problem with anyother internet site. It must be something with the script :(
But I keep hacking at work :)

PHP shouldn`t be any slower than ASP, and even MySQL would work satisfactory if it don`t have to many user at once. Of couse multiple users slow the whole process down, but that only causes even more problems with the complexity for the scripts. Do you actually need 36(!) queries to the MySQL database to show a page like this? It should ble easy to make a board like this with no more than ten queries at least.

My Satellite DSL has officially been tested now...Last night I couldn't log on from 7pm, until this afternoon after 5pm!!!

Not that I'm an EGN junky or anything, but I had some conversations I was eager to get back into, and my prime hours I can log in these days is during the eveingings and late nights...Is there some kind of maintanence regularly going on that I should try and avoid to not have this logging on problem???

Thanks!!!

Dan,

There has been no visible interruption in the site's availability last night. There are times recently that we have had serious slow operation due to some server processes engaging, like log rotations, statistics generations, backups, etc. and we have been trying to fix those to not have disruptions even during the wee hours of the morning, which are still busy since people are hitting the site from all over the world. There have also been problems with the ISP network where there are short outage bursts but there is nothing we can do about that. When this site is slow or unavailable it is due to one of the above reasons - most of the time the site zips along. All in all, we try to keep the site available and responsive 24x7, but it is getting harder and harder as the site content and bandwidth is increasing daily and there are simply no funds to kick the site up into a more robust hosting environment, rather, at this time, we are just barely clinging on to keep what we have online.

I would chack the fan belt and the roto-shaft. Always gives me trouble!

Yes MySQL is being over queried but I doubt the traffic is enough to expose that as a problem, that's just sloppy programming.

As for the slowness...blame the major backbones in general... there's oversubscription, viruses, and spam that currently have all of the backbones WAY past capacity. If you aren't connected a peer or two away from whereever EGN is you're likely to see a delay.

The only sites that are responding decently these days are hyper redunandant uber sites on extremely expensive hosted platforms. There are people trying to fix the havoc but it's everywhere..

It's been this way for the better part of a week... whether or not you are seeing it and to what degree please take my word that most of what you're experiencing is that the "Internet" is extremely crippled.
