View Full Version : What happened to Shadowplay?

I just read a statement on their website that they are no longer using the name and they won't be affiliated to Shadowplay Electonica. The reason for this or what happened is a little vague on their statement.

Im just curious. Any body have any insight on this?

Official Press Release:

Due to irreconcilable differences, Shadowplay Productions, U.S. and Shadowplay Electronica have mutually decided to part ways. Shadowplay Productions, U.S. will now be known as 14:59 records.

This decision was met on mutual ground, and no "hard feelings" were maintained. 14:59 Records wishes the best for Shadowplay Electronica.

The compilation "Electronica in Shadows" is due for immediate release. Artists involved with the compilation will be receiving their copies in the mail shortly. (Please see www.shadowplay-us.com for more details)

14:59 Records is in the works of some major releases. Two compilations are being "compiled" at the current time, one synthpop genre focused and the other darkwave / goth / industrial. We have some amazing artists involved with these compilations, however there is still room! Anyone interested in submitting may contact me at info@shadowplay-us.com (the new website should be up, which will then turn the email into info@1459.com.)

This restructure will have little effect on the artists already signed to Shadowplay, riders will be sent out on the current contracts

I personally want to thank you for your support through this restructure, and promise only good things will come out of it!

Thank you,

Sean Patrick

what's the story behind the name of the label? :)

Just in case you're *not* being sarcastic, look at the sig. ;)

I prefer the new name.
You are making a better marketing move.
It doesn't sound scene focused.
Remember to always avoid anything that sound too gothic.

Hey Sean,

Sorry to rush your press release :) Wasn't sure if it was already addressed here and I missed it.

I like the new 14:59 logo a lot better than the Shadowplay one.

Tons of luck to u.

Rich

I say ... that this is probably the best move for Sean's label and for all of us who are affiliated with it. From here we go forward. Look out world, here we come!

Ehh....ok. Just so long as the album scheduled still come out (like Blind Before Dawn's debut) as scheduled, The name change doesn't mean much to me. I am a little confused, not knowing the whole story here, but it's really non of my buisness anyway...

Thanks to everyone for such a positive welcome! I was a little worried about the backlash, but so far it all seems positive!

Logo Design credits go to Jeff Harper of Intervox.....that's his design! He's one talented fellow!

Again, thanks, and stay tuned!

What has happened to ”Shadowplay”?

A lot has happened to Shadowplay Electronica since it started about nine month or so ago. From being just a little promotion trick for a few bands, we can now almost say that Shadowplay Electronica is a “real label”. I say almost, because you don’t get to be called a label without earning it.

Out of four projects we have been involved with since October 2002 two of them has been successfully completed, one is hopefully on the way and one is definitely on the way.

Our first release was “Delay and Depression” with Marina Sirtis. The album got great critics in European zines with remarks including “The best synthpop album I've heard this year“ and “A very recommendable and successful masterpiece”.

Our second release was ”rest of man” with [brus]. This album was also received very well with reviews such as “Beautiful melodic lines and a catchy dance break” and “Rest of Man leaves me fresh and wanting more”. We are very pleased with the outcome of both these projects.

The third project, the only one in co-operation with Shadowplay Production US, has been delayed a great number of times. This is the “Electronica in Shadows” compilation that features many artists familiar from EGN. Some of you may remember the very small-scale core of this project back in October 2002 when the idea of a Shadowplay had not yet been born. This project served as a test if Shadowplay Electronica and Shadowplay Production US should get involved in more projects in the future. As is already known to the public we have decided to not co-operate on future projects. Still I have a hope in my mind that the compilation will be released soon.

The fourth project is the biggest and most interesting so far. We are organising a festival in Stockholm featuring

MICHIGAN (swe)
LOGH (swe)
INTRICATED (dk)
MARINA SIRTIS (swe)
BLIND BEFORE DAWN (uk)
[BRUS] (swe)
SCAPESONIK (swe)
SANDY MOUCH (swe)

In this project we are co-operating with the Sputnik Festival Crew. For more information, take a look at http://www.sputnikfestival.com .

So to sum up: A few more releases or a few more events and we will have earned the right to call Shadowplay Electronica a “ real label” and hopefully some respect from the music community.

Well when a Label can afford Video's etc I take it to be a proper label and as far as im concerned 14:59 is. The acts speak for themselfs credible!:) From the diversity of Kiss*the*star, the mythics, styxfactor, the thought criminals and the solo stuff by David Vessel or the electronics of Synthetik fm ...and others i havent mentioned i think this little label has a big chance of going somewhere.....Not just in the USA but things dont happen overnight and it will take sometime !!

heheheh

I always thought a "real" label had distribution in major retail outlets and didn't just try and sell their cd over the internet. But what do I know???

Congratulations, you seem to be ahead of the game. It always seems like when an organization wants to make progress, there's always something or someone pulling them in non-constructive directions. I'm glad you avoided that.

One can hope. Respect is a difficult thing to achieve.

Congratulations to Sean for picking himself up and marching forward after watching his hard work crushed to pieces by a foul wind. I echo what all have already said - Sean's move to break away from Shadowplay and create 14:59 Records is a very positive one. I look forward to working with everyone involved!

I don’t think a ”real label” has to have editions like Brittney spears and sell in all stores. Take A Different Drum. I can’t find my ”A Different Drum” CDs next to Brittney neither in my local CD store or in the biggest in town. But A Different Drum has released a lot of CDs and they have shown that they are not just talk. So a small label can be a ”real label”. Then again, a label can not be that small that they don’t release CDs :)

There are a great many about that don't think that ADD is a real label either ... not that I am in that camp per se ... but everyone has their own yard sticks. Many think of ADD as on online music store that happens to also release cd's.

I must say tho ... I get the impression from all the postings that the Shadowplay split was less than amicable ... and that their is no good will between the bands or heads of both "labels". Nice to see that this scene can stick together. It would be truely nice if both camps could wish each other well and stop the ¤¤¤¤ing back biting and move on ....

For the record....

No, the split was not as amicable as I wished or tried to present to the public eye. Unfortunate, but true. HOWEVER....

I for one hold no "ill-will" towards SPE, their artists, nor Martin. I do want to formally request all 14:59 records artists to refrain from the "fodder throwing", it's not going to do anything for us or the scene.

I cannot, nor will not, say anything but this. 14:59 Records and it's artists are moving forward, we do wish the best for SPE and their "camp".

Let this be the end of that. It can only hurt the scene in general. Let our actions speak louder then words.

actually i do have to admit that... i took a design class last semester (oh was that humurous)... anyways, one project was logo design... we spent a lot of time critiquing... that one would have done well..

good logos are gifts... i'd say out of a class of 20 we came up with about 500 comps... of those 500 comps maybe 10 were even worth taking to another level and I'll be honest, I think 2 people out of all of us thought up the 10... natural talent.

We'll be listening. :) best of luck to both "labels". It's a hard industry, if you guys don't like what's being said, prove it wrong.

Maybe some of the words that sound like insults are well-intentioned challenges.

Just a thought.

peace,

Dave

Agreed. As a 14:59'er myself, I hold no ill will towards Martin or his artists (in fact I think Scapesonik are really quite cool!) ... things happen, and I hope nothing the best for his label, his artists, other labels in the scene ... and synthpop/electronica music in general!

Let's put bad feelings aside and move forward. Let the music play!
