View Full Version : What is the most NON-synth/ebm/goth/industrial concert you have ever seen?

For those of us who have been around for a while, I'm sure that you have seen some concerts that are far removed from the genre of music that has brought us all to this forum. What is the oddest show that you have ever seen?
A few years ago, my (now ex) girlfriend and I began making a joke about singing Tom Jones songs in public as an appropriate responce to various things that people would say. Neither of us was into his music or anything, it was just something to annoy people with. Anyway, one thing led to another and someone gave us tickets to see him in Atlantic City, NJ. I have to say that seeing a short, extremely sweaty man jumping around on stage wiping his brow with women's panties and singing that 'hip' music was one of the most enjoyable shows that I have ever been to. Everyone in the audience was singing along and it was a great vibe. Just goes to show that a joke really can be taken too far.

though BruceHornsby (ask gordonctrl (http://www.electrogarden.com/forums/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=2174) about him ):> ) playing synth and piano with theGratefulDead was odd.

God..tons of hair metal concerts in the late 80's...a few country when i was younger with my parents....I saw the Jackson's victory tour in 1984....
I go to a lot of punk and indie shows as well.......A very non synth show that was one of the most amazing performances that i have EVER seen was Nina Simone in 1998 on the Pier in Seattle. Gorgeous night with one of the most powerful voice in Jazz/Blues...she was a senior citizen, but so full of spark and power...it was one of those "goosebumps throughout the whole show and for like a week after" concerts....she is VERY missed (She passed away a few months ago).....

My wife took me to see Tina Turner twice on her farewell tour a couple of years ago, and we had a good time both times. I suppose that Tina has a synthpop connection since she was recorded songs written by the Pet Shop Boys, but her opening acts are a different story.
The first time the opening act was Lionel Richie. He was actually pretty good, even though my wife didn't recognize his name it slowly dawned on her that early 80's aor radio was dominated by his songs. It was amusing to see a couple of women in their 40's and 50's getting terribly excited to see Lionel while their husbands sat in their seats with annoyed looks.
Six months later when Tina came back around for her final farewell date (I guess the tour got extended when they figured out they could make some more money) the opening act was Joe Cocker. We found our seats while he was playing a completely funk-free version of a Bob Marley song and found ourselves laughing through the whole set. He was a little too old and too fat be as cool as he apparently thought he was and it was just a bit too silly. The best part of the show was when he played air piano during the instrumental section of "You Are So Beautiful." It just said so much somehow. He just hadn't aged very well, and someone needs to tell him that he doesn't really "rock" anymore.

My ex boyfriend took me to see Tina in 1997, and she was pretty amazing....but in all honesty, the main reason I went was that Cyndi Lauper opened for her...she was phenomenal....

When I was 10 I won tickets to see Reba McEntire (for those of you who haven't heard of her, she was about as hard core country as you can get -- of course before she got on a sitcom...) At the time I was in heaven....and I still freak my friends out with how many country songs I know by heart :) But hey, that's what happens when you grow up in New Mexico.

Here's my list:
NKOTB (twice), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (yes, they had an album out!), Stone Temple Pilots, Candlebox, Budweiser Superfest (Montel Jordan, Mary J. Blige, Boyz II Men), Boyz II Men again, Toadies (twice), Tripping Daisy, Funland, Emilio, Sigur Ros, Everclear, Sponge (I got onstage and sung with them, heh), R. Kelly & LL Cool J, the nixons, Carmen.....
And I've been to several festivals with bands like Matchbox 20, No Doubt (who I fell asleep on!), Lisa Loeb, and others....
There's been ALOT more.... but I'm just too lazy to think of them all right now.
Most of these.... well all except for Sigur, I saw when I was in my early teens.... so most of them I'm not too proud of right now. Heh.

Actually, most of the concerts I've attended were not synthpop/electro/industrial oriented. But many of them seemed to be piano oriented.
My first concert, I saw Billy Joel in 1986. He is the biggest non-synth influence on my own stuff....I basically learned songwriting from him. He put on one hell of a show. He only pulls out a synth to perform "Pressure".
Another excellent show, and the biggest surprise, was Debbie Gibson in 1988. She never got much respect, but she put on a great show, she can play piano dammit, and.....god she is tiny! Like 5 foot nuthin.

I admit to seeing Westlife in concert at Wembley this summer in London. It's a long story! I also saw Tony Hadley, but he was in Spandau Ballet, and hence is still technically a Blitz Kid. I've seen Cher several times with my mother. I will even admit to seeing Poison when I was 14--but they did wear make-up back in the 80s, so it must have been legal for me to see them.

Ozzy Osbourne!
I remember very little of the actual concert. Our car broke down on the way. We took a taxi the rest of the way and on the trip back we were met with a snowstorm. Those were the days.

In my defense, i was about 8 for Sha Na Na, and Kenny Loggins was about the time of Footloose...if that's an excuse *lol* It kinda sucked growing up in Erie, PA, cos we never got anyone good...you had to travel to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, or Buffalo--all 2 hours away--and i didn't quite have the funds as a teen to do that :sobbing:

Hmm. Most Non-Synth related shows I have been to. That may take stepping into the way-back machine. Lets start with the most recent show, Current 93. No synths there. I have also seen bands like Dead Can Dance, The Cocteau Twins, Death In June, Einsturzende Neubauten, Nick Cave, Human Drama, Sisters of Mercy, REM and a plethora of others. Unlike everyone else, I haven't really seen any 'odd' bands like 2 Live Crew or Vanilla Ice. Though the worst show ever would have to had been the Sisters of Mercy show. Yup.

Rancid
Strychnine
AFI
Guttermouth

Two and a Half White Guys

I was dragged to a lot of metal shows by my best friend in the early 90's and then I would make him go see an industrial/gothish show, it was like a competition of "who can cause the other the most pain"
bands he made me see:
Exodus
Black Sabbath
Dio
Savatage
Gwar
The Undead(no metal but still hurt a bit)
The Meatmen(not metal and really hurt)
In return I made him see:
KMFDM
Thrill Kill Kult
Chem Lab
Skrew
Die Krupps
Sister Machine Gun
Heavy Water Factory
The Sisters of Mercy

Yeah..and "To Hell With The Devil"...they chucked bibles into the audience...it was a little scary actually...and they had this Japanese metal band called Loudness opening for them...Looking back, it was pretty damned funny...a friend took me...i went to see Kiss a week later and he quit speaking to me...lol...his family thought Kiss were the devil...god..if he could hear what i listen to now...

I saw Ratt and Bon Jovi back in like '85. Bon Jovi was just starting out and everybody kept yelling for them to play "Runaway" and get off the stage.
Ratt put on a decent show if I must say so myself.
I also saw Jeannie C. Riley (she did the Harper Valley PTA song) at the Mt. Vernon Co. Fair in Ohio way back when I was a kid. That was the most boring thing I have ever done in my life.

Neil Diamond.
It was about 4 or 5 years ago. We had reserved seats, in the ninth row.
I didn't actually *buy* my ticket. My friend Beth had bought tickets for herself and another friend, but her friend cancelled on the day of the show. I wasn't doing anything else that night, so I went.
They didn't search anyone on the way in. Beth and I both had cameras. She didn't get caught, but I did. I took a picture of Neil Diamond, and suddenly there was a security person standing over me.
I was escorted into an office, where they confiscated my film and explained that they had to do it because Neil gets 'upset' when he sees camera flashes. They also told me they were going to hold onto my camera for the duration of the concert, and I could come and pick it up afterwards.
I missed "Sweet Caroline."

For me it must have been either Coldplay last year, or...(brrr) Elton John in 1995, I think. Oh, well..I'm embarrased to admit I liked the show...
But there was a Greek synth group making mostly weird hypnotic f*****g awesome dark dancey music back in the 90's, called Stereo Nova. They were among the best, I'd been to 4 of their shows and each time I'd been left mesmerized. They'd done a few songs in English, and nearly became succesful with one called ''New Life'' (nothing to do with DM) in 1995. I think it was played a lot in Germany and it'd got a bit of MTV coverage. Later on they split up (they lasted from around 1990 until 1999) and they continued with solo careers, not nearly as good, though, but this was one band whose songs deserved to be heard.

Hmm. . . had to pull out old ticket stubs to remember what shows I've been to.
right off the bat, I remember:
Echo & the Bunnymen
Siouxsie & the Banshees
The Primitives
The Sugarcubes
But holy smokes! Old tix stubs tell me that I've been to:
Fugazi
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
They Might Be Giants
The Primitives
The Sugarcubes
Morrissey
Elvis Costello
and one that really stood out. . . London Symphony Orchestra. Mom and dad brought me to that one, and it was really wonderful considering I know nothing about classical music. Soon thereafter, my parents gave me their old record player and classical vinyl collection : )

I have a question but i don't think it warrants an entire thread. So since EBM is mentioned in the title of this thread here I thought i'd ask it here.
What exactly is EBM and while we're at it, what is Dark Wave?
I listen to lots of electronica, but i'm not familiar with those two terms.....yes, i feel stupid (as I feel I should know this, but I don't).
please give examples of bands that play each type.........thanks
~eurotic
August 4th, 2003, 11:02 AM
ebm= electronic body music. Think Front 242 (who are said to be the originators) and up to bands like Icon of Coil, A23 and VNV Nation. There's a thousand arguments that these are just trance and house music rip-offs, but it's close enough.
darkwave= generally the band I think of most with this is Switchblade Symphony. Electronic gothiness galore.
And I've been to see Harry Connick Jr twice. That's as non-industrial as I can go.
~rix harisson
August 4th, 2003, 11:47 AM
thankz Euro,
that tells me a lot. I've got some VNV Nation, and I like it. I'll have to check out some of the others you mention.
I've heard people say good things about Switchblade Symphony (here in the electrogarden threads) so I think i'll check them out first.

No problem. EBM is basically your basic 4-on-the-floor tunes that most people seem to be grooving to these days.
And get SSymphony's "Serpentine Gallery". Incredible album.
