Hello everyone,
I'm new around these parts, and I wanted to share something with my electro peers. But I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. So excuse this newbie if I fugged up.
Anyways, I'm a cartoonist in LA, and I'm working on a new show, where one of the main characters is a goth/electro/punk-riot grrl. So the other day I had to do a shotof her bedroom. I thought some of you would get a kick out of seeing this shot, as it's got some good electro references. However, keep in mind that when it does show up on TV, the band names will be slightly altered for leagal reasons.
Well, here it is. Let's see how many bands you can find:

Nice drawing. Just please spell "Fischerspo" correctly (on the wall), and you've got a winner.

Actually, we have to alter all the names because of legal reasons. I wish we could keep them all real, but that would take too long to clear. Even though it would basically be free publicity for those bands. Nickelodeon wouldn't go for it.

LOL! You like the vinyl -- I wanted to make her ultra-cool. Someone who's a hardcore music fan. Notice the SH101 and the little yamaha drum machine down there too.
Okay... later! :)

Wow... It's a cool picture... I like it a lot..:)

And a couple of reeeeeel old references in there too. Anyone pick up the EN poster?
~NullDevice
July 24th, 2003, 09:58 AM
EN poster? How could you miss it? :)
Damn, I mis-identified the SH-101 as a Juno60. If it had the mod-grip, I'd've caught it immediately.
Of course no electro-punk girl's room would be complete without either the violator rose or a Joy Division poster *somewhere*. :)
For some reaosn I'm reminded of the "spot the references" game you could play with Jhonen Vasquez's "Anne Gwish" - the "Einstuerzende Somethingsomething" poster, the ad for "Bram Stoker's Chocula", "Carpe Spooky" magazine, etc.
Anyway.
Keep us posted as to when this show is on. If there's a character in it who owns an SH-101, I'll certainly watch it!

Why is there a cable plugged into the SH101 's ext clock input ? The yamaha drum system cannot provide + 5v square wave sync it requires, so what is clocking it ?
LOL : Cool picture.
I have added a kenton midi to trigger interface efor you so it will clock the sequncer if you hit the pads. You will need to overdrive the output from the yamaha to clip and switch the trigger though.
Hope this helps !

HA!!! Some funny replies! I'll look into athenticating the SH101 and the Yamaha a little better. LOL! Look for it to air sometime in late Januray, on Nickelodeon. The show is called Danny Phantom. I've made TONS of electro references throughout the series -- so you'll catch them here and there.
I'll post some more later on... It's just that not all my drawings are with ELECTRO themes. Although, this one might qualify. It's Hanin E, from Atari Teenage Riot. It's just a doodle from my sketchboook.

I hate to tell you, but the main character is a boy. Sorry. However, SAM the girl in the drawing seems to always steal the show. We're starting to write a few more episodes that revolve mostly around her. She's a scene stealer.

Definately cool drawings.
So you're working with (or hoping to work with) Nickelodeon? That's cool. I hope you have a better experience than a couple people I know had with them. I know Jhonen didn't leave exactly pleased.
Still, spot on drawings. And YAY for the EN refference.

I have had a relationship with Nickelodeon for over 7 years. I designed Spongebob Squarepants and wrote/storyboarded/directed three seasons worth. They have been nothing but good to me, and have treated me with utter respect.
Some people just seem to play the game better then others. I fought the battles that I thought where worth fighting for. Some I lost, but that has been the case with nearly every studio I've ever been at. So far, for what I do -- personally speaking -- Nickelodeon is the lesser of all evils. Cartoon Network is going down the tubes -- no money is coming in at all.
I know what happened to Jhonan -- and it seems that he got the bad lot of the Nickelodeon suits. Fortunately for myself and my friends, when we where doing Spogebob, we made it a point stay in the peripheral of the netwerk executives. Hell, they totally thought Spongebob was going to BOMB. Well, look at it now -- it's out of control. Now all we hear the suits say is... "More like Spongebob." Little did they now we where always stonned when we wrote all those stories and jokes!!!
:)
I had a chance to work on Invader Zim, but things didn't work out between his people and I. No problems with Jhonen -- not that I know of anyway? So I went off to draw and write three seasons of Samurai Jack instead. If you ever catch the RAVE episode I did, you'll see Kraftwerk, Front242, Daft Punk, Zombie Nation, Devo, Skinny Puppy and a slew of other electro artists in that episode. So ultimately it was for the best -- cuz while I was at Samurai Jack, Zim had gotten canceled and people were scrambling for work. It was sad -- it's always sad when a good show gets canned. It's about to happen again to a new show called "I was a Teenage Robot." It's good, but it's not being renewed.
I've been very fortunate, in that I've taken on projects that have legs. Speaking of which, we just found out, the show I'm working on has been picked up for another year. The one that the drawing came from in the first post.
Well thas it fo' now. Good talking to you Seraphim.

I'm just sittin' here enjoying being in the same general web vicinity as a minor celebrity. My life is boring and "normal" so I must live vicariously through the artistic success of others.
Before this, the closest I got to a TV celebrity was my sister-in-law editing bass fishing shows for TNN. :)

Awesome drawings, ephekt. I liked the first one best but the drawing of the woman is really nice too. Keep it real. Peace.

Cool. I was unaware that you already had a working relationship with Nickelodeon what with working on Sponge bob and all. From the looks of your drawings and the idea, I hope this show takes off just as well.
As for Jhonen, well, yeah, he does tend to play his own game. He's one of the oddest people I know but one of the nicest as well. Hopefully he'll get on the ball and eventually release what I hear he's been working on.

LOL! There was one in particular that we were kinda stonned almost everyday for like two weeks writing an episode called SB129. It's where Squidward goes through time to get away from Spongebob, but eventually ends up in "NOWHERE." It's kinda weird -- but it's a cult classic.
Also, there was a Spongebob Jellyfish rave episode I did, and I did all the music on a QY70. Then later handed over the midi files to the composer for him to finish. We were also pretty fugged up writting and drawing that one.
I'm glad you like the show -- the movie is going to be even more fugged up. Although we're in the process of some re-writes cuse after we saw Finding Nemo there was just too many similarities.
Late.

Let's hope so, cuz I got a lot of friends who need the work -- and if all goes well we can start hiring more people. We are a VERY small unit. But now that we got picked up for another season, hopefully we can add a few more artists to the equation.
We're also going to be commissioning some hip hop, electro, and industrial bands to do some songs for us. They want me to do a couple of short music videos to help hype up the show. That's fine by me -- extra money means more music gear in my studio.

Hmmm
A "goth/electro/punk-riot grrl" cartoon character?
Kind of like the girl in my webcomic?;)

I've enjoyed your work...and I wish you luck on this...
(I have a LOT of ideas you may want)
If anyone has seen my webcomic EntropyKid
at http://www.entropykid.com I think this would make a smashingly wacky and kick butt cartoon on Nickelodeon!

Good stuff on your site! Really awesome style. Reminds me of Jhonen's stuff a little. I tried to check out your gallery though, and nothing came up? I hope we'll get to check out some more artwork soon.
Always good to find other artists into the same sub-cultures! You're a pro, my friend, keep up the good work.
Here's another one I did, called "I.D.M.GRRL" :) Hope you like it --TTYL.

Oh man, your comments really made my day!(especially coming from someone like you!) Its a continuous evolution tho, as Im never satisfied. Yeah the gallerys not up yet, but I have a lot of the more professional commission work I wanna put up.
I just think its so cool they are allowing ya guys to put in a industrial-rivet type girl in a nick cartoon! Definately a new era.
I just need to say one thing tho: Her room needs posters of
VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, and Covenant. Trust me,
you guys would be getting fans fainting if ya were to reference the big names in modern industrial/electronic music!
