Not only did the Innovator of Synthpop scare David Bowie and Depeche Mode ( who came abit to late to be the first!) but now he collabarates with JUNKIE XL Angels is a brilliant track...I wonder why NIN covered Metal a track from 1979 and Marilyn Manson coverd Down in the Park 1979 and Fear FACTORY cars the origanal from 1979 ....and the Hundreds of Numan cover's which a lot of people cant face as they seem oblivious because Numan wasnt over promted on MTV !
Numan came before Depeche Mode unlike this myth which seems to hang here taht DM are the only act ...Numans shifted more records than them and Singles!I like DM but vince and the boys were 2 years late.
Oh well Crazier is released on the 23rd of June another guaranted top 40 uk single!
NUMAN IS THE GOD THE PIONEER AND INNOVATOR THERES MORE THAN MTV!

Nah, I don't need to get laid. I'm doing just fine in that dept. But you clearly have a lot of angst to work out. All this harassing people over Junkie XL on an internet message board is a sign my dear.
And consider it done. Satanic b i t c h e z it is.

Numan is indeed an innovator, but he lost his way big time somewhere around 1982, when Depeche were just beginning to find their feet. Depeche also went for emotional warmth and depth, that Numan has always been either unwilling or unable to go for. I like Numan – he did some amazing stuff in 1979–1982 – but I would still rate Depeche much above him. I'm not too wild about Numan's recent comeback albums: decent sounds but every song sounds the same and his constant whining about the evils of religion is really beginning to annoy me. Not for ideological reasons, but simply because any theme gets boring if you write three albums about it.
As for Junkie XL: does anybody else love the eightteenth track, Broken (feat. Grant Nicholas). Just sublime.

He is one of MANY innovators. "Are Friends Electric" is simply brilliant. I think that he deserves MAJOR cudos for his work.

Eldritch i agree 1982 was a bad year for Numan the Funk was comeing through then the warriors mullet in 1983. But i dont like Warmth in songs so Numan's rants on Religeon i find quite justified. Considering he lost his Daughter,Grandafther, bassist ,Grandfather and dog duye writeing these albums ! Depeche mode i dont rate that highly i like there stuff and singles but Exciter has to be one of the worst albums ive heard yet loads of people ranted on how amazing it it was crap compared to Ultra. I love the origanal and mid depeche mode period and the singles but I dont rate there Albums as much...Just not me i suppose yet the Singles are? I just dont class Depeche Mode on the levels of Frank Tovey or John Foxx but i think as a band they are defiantly one of the best ever!
But EFREAK AFE is an anthem. Replicas was pure innovation...

Human League Being Boiled 1978 - so electronic that Virgin feared it wouldn't work because it had no guitars in it. Numan at this time was still using guitars ;)
DM on the other hand were more experimental with synths than Numan's rather simplistic one dimensional Ultravox b-side rejects. I like some of Numan's stuff but Mode and the League had a richer sound and never used pre-sets.

Orac I myself love HL and Being Boiled ...DM well there singles but not much else. I think Numan pushed synths far more than you've stated Im an Agent for example is beyound anything of its day..There is nothing simplistic about that song and its not very UVOX... The Human Leauge's Dare album was very basic and simplistic but brilliant Open Your Heart as an example is an all time classic but the synths were minimal on that ....... I would say Reproduction is my all time favourite HL album! Due to the fact its Dark Cold and Empire State Human is on it!
Preset's I disagree orac ermmm Numan was one of the first people in the UK to have a sampler . And notice Waldorfs legendry and most powerfull synthisizer in the world the PPG.2.3 had a Numan Set of Preset sounds but this was 1984. Note Numan was useing Arp Prophets and Mini Moog's....Not many Preset's on those you create your own sound's and you can have serious fun!
Numan for Experimental:
First Trance-EBM track: My Dying Machine 12"
Metal-Probaly the definative Industrial Track
We Are Glass- for the generic synthpop single
down in the park -even though i admit circus of death was around as well by HL !
Remind Me to Smile-of the telekon album but so coldwave outhere
Unknown and Hostile..Before DM introduced thatIndustrial Beta numan was doing it
thepleasureskin, creatures, tricks, the ship comes aprt, anthem,we need it- ok 1985 Numan had a bad image red bowtie white suit but why was Roland Endorseing him? The synth sounds he used then I have heard re-used on loads of modern electro based songs...it was very cutting edge The Fury just a bad Period for Numan's Image and the Numa Record Label!

The first Numan album I bought was the fury, in 1985. Luckily the person I borrowed it off had lost the cassette sleve , so didnt get introduced by the stupi white suit.
I loved it all, and went on to become a massive fan. I genuinly think he has been ground breaking, and there are still sounds on his albums that are not available elseware.
It is slightly unfair to compare him to the Dare period HL and Depeche mode, in terms of sound, as niether of these bands produced their own records, nor programmed their own synths during these periods. (martin rushent and Daniel miller retrospecively), where as numan did.
Just out of interest here is Eight to Infinity doffing our black trilbies to mr numan, (Are freinds electric) :
