View Full Version : An amazing find

So today my boyfriend got out of school early and he decided to go to a used record store. When he got there he found some Red Flag cds and as he was flipping through the cd's, lo and behold there is the Megablack box set. So he buys it since he knows it is the one Red Flag thing I'm missing except Native Dance. It is about $18. So he gets it and goes to the car and opens up the box. Inside the little book, what does he find? ITS AUTOGRAPHED!! Both Mark and Chris autographed it!! He brought it home and made me close my eyes and then he gave it to me.
I can't believe it, I am so shocked and astounded. It really means a lot and now it is super super special because of Mark and Chris' signature. I'm so glad I waited to buy the set.
Sorry if I ramble, I'm just excited!
Have any of you had a similar experience?

Something slightly similar. A few years ago I was e-mailing back and forth with a guy in Canada on the Men Without Hats list. We would buy each other CD's that were hard to get in our respective countries. Anyway, after a thread discussion on Rational Youth this guy (Ralph) got me copies of both All Our Saturdays (compilation) and Cold War Night Life.
I listened to the latter for ages without bothering to look at the booklet closely until one day I read it and lo and behold in the centre pages were the signatures of Tracy Howe and Bill Vorn! That was so cool, but Ralph didn't warn me about this and it was a complete surprise.

Actually I did...I won an auction on ebay about four years ago for a promo photo of Red Flag (it's the same black & white picture featured in the liners of Naive Dance)...This one was really super cool looking because it had the band name in some kick a** industrial-esque font...
When it arrived, I was completely taken back when it arrived because right smack in the middle of the picture next to Mark and Chris was their respective signatures...The pic on ebay never eluded to it being autographed neither did the description of the item...I think I came up on a lucky purchase that day...I've since had a custon red metal frame with cogs and sprocket screws holding it together made for it and it still hangs in my room today...

I ordered De/Vision's "Lonely Day" MCD from their website and it came autographed...anyone else's autographed? I mean I wasn't jumping for joy or anything, I was just like, "Oh cool...whatever." Later.

I ordered the Wreath of Barbs cd singles from the Wumpscut site. Rudy was kind enough to sign them, unfortunately he signed them on the plastic and not on the paper sleeve.

Cool, it's nice to see we have had such neat experiences. I'm not sure if all the Megablack sets were signed, but I have heard that during one period of time if you ordered it you got it signed. What I don't get is why anyone would sell the box set. I'm not complaining though!

The Red Flag site (before it went down) did say that all the Megablack sets were autographed...Lucky you, to find a used copy for $18!!! I can't believe someone would sell theirs either.
Have you tried eBay for the Naive Dance CD?

Yeah I've seen Native Dance a few times on Ebay, but typically when I see it, it's either vinyl or its too much mollah. However, I will keep my eye out!

When I pre-ordered "The Bitter End", I added a note asking if there was any chance I could get my copy autographed. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived to find that they had both signed the jewel case insert! :)

They are sooo nice. Once when the Spider and the Astronaut cd came out I ordered it but it came broken. So I let them know and they sent me a new one without any questions or even wanting the broken cd. I was really happy about that and I thought at the time, "Wow these guys are great." I still think that hehehe. :)

wait a minute!!!!
you actually say that those autographes are not printed on the MegaBlack Boxes?!?!?!?!?!?
I have it for a long time now.. this box is my fave release from the band, and I always thought that those autographes by the pictures are printed in a very good way which makes it look like a real signature...
Now that I look at it closly, it does look real,,,
wooow
that is amazing

Thats an amazing story.... Woww!!!
Last year I went to the Out of the Closet thrift store in Glendale Cali. I was browsing the video section for some porn(j.k) videos of meditation, Alias, and some old films.. What do I find? Red Flag "Machines." Thats right, it was only 50 cents..... I cant believe it......I love those guys...

The Machines single in a thrift store for only 50 cents? That really is an amazing find! Where I'm at, I never see any RF CDs in the used bins at all, which means either nobody knows who they are, or else we're desperately hanging on to our CDs... ;)
Slippy, they make "those" sort of movies that you can meditate to? I didn't even think that was possible. J/K LOL ;)

It's funny, even though it was only 50 cents, the cd case was in really really in bad condition... I did change it..
Regarding the meditation tapes, that same day I was able to find a motivational tape called "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus(How to communicate in a relationship)by Dr. John Gray." Yeahhh I know I'm weird...

Hi Lab,
wow - besides i really appreciate beein your mailpal i wont give away that collection outa my hands for a million bucks (well - we should talk about a million again hehehe) . I guess - tragic as it is - those people that bought the last releases with the autographed naive art cd knew as well they did a final good deal.
hei lab, how did u get the last just online titles? i did not manage getting them as i have no credit card (yes we germans still pay cash - well - some of us). any idea where i can find em - buy them. i dont wanna steal music. i bought all rf music legally and two times or even more but as a true fan i see no way getting the stuff from anywhere now.
sigh... :(
kindly greeting,

Tom,
Actually I bought the Megablack set shortly after the news broke, so I don't need your extra copy, hehehe. But if you ever change your mind, I could find it a new home!
If you are referring to the Value Pak 3 that had all the albums and the autographed Naive Art, I don't think the band managed to sell any of those. Mark had just put it up on the RF site shortly before his death. Stephanie tried to buy it, but Sandi emailed her to say it wasn't available. :(
I didn't buy the new Digital Produkt that had just come out at the beginning of April, so don't have the full version of Move On (I DL'd a 30 second clip from the RF site earlier this year) or Dark Side of the Sun. :( It was because I couldn't find five songs I wanted to buy...oh well. I downloaded the Forgiving Sea and Russian Radio remix tracks for free a couple months back. I take it you have those? Otherwise, try PMing Cheetah...he offered to help with RF music in another post someplace else. Sadly, I don't have a CD burner or I'd make you a copy of the songs.
BTW, are you referring to the Canary Isles? Just wondering...

Hi Lab,
happy to hear u grabbed one. You really deserve possessing it as true fan. Gosh - everyone should have a copy. I luv that piano tracks soooo much - did i say that already a 10000 times. My fave sure is in my arms again - that song is a 110% herat melting. It was always. Let me ask - it was Chris who played the piano - am I right. I hope he is aware of his birlliant talent and will go on doin musical enlightments in any way. He sure was as much red flag as mark was. I think that has to be said frineds.
The big value pack? Ummm - mabe ure right. I think that offer was not something u buy spontaneously. Besides it was bargain and i would have bought one - let alone by having my naive art cd signes which maybe already was done beofre.
A good memory from a true star.

He he, Tom, don't kick me to Mars for saying this, but I still like the Fear Series box more than the Megablack, autographs and all. :) I am also glad to have bought the Black Christmas single shortly before the Plan B site went offline. And yes, Chris was the pianist. I too hope that he will not give up music entirely.
If you do leave Germany, good luck in whatever you may pursue! :)

I thought it might be a little presumptuous for me to start a thread in the Red Flag forum, since I haven't been a fan for very long. But I just recieved "Naive Art (Special Edition)" from an undisclosed source ;) , gave it a listen, and WOW! I had to say something!!! My s/o likes it too. I feel kind of silly that it took me so long to find them! The music is awsome, and the vocals are incredible. Thank You "undisclosed source"!!!

Gosh. I gave it a try but i did not share this experience. Maybe its that there is none of my TEN BEST RED FLAG SONGS on it. On Megablack there is...there are. Since I luved the Crypt and EAC thsi BLACK BOX was by far the best collection for me. Even if there are loads of uninspired remixes I did not fancy. But beyond this there is sheer gold, like IN MY ARMS AGAIN...
what a song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks labrat for the wishes. I guess it´ll take some months and brave acting to leave my homeland...we´ll see where wind will take us to.

Moles: So which track on Crypt did you not like? *LOL* ;) Your ten fave tracks were all on that one album, right?
@ 7red7: I envy you for being able to play Lighthouse in your car. My car lets in too much of the road noise for me to play that CD and be able to hear Mark's vocals. :(

@hehe labrat. funny words but thank godness this is not true. my all-time-fave is "in my arms again" i guess, followed by "LOVE" , then there is that piano song from the frist album and one of the additional bonus tracks on the naive art re-release. but 4 sure the crypt and eac gave me some of my beloved rf tacks - and rfs - thy crypt is by far one of my best albums i ever shopped.
@7r7 - the lighthouse is made for that beach-touring thing. i have all my red flag discs packed on my creative jukebox - besides ist just mp3 walking along the beach and listening to red flag is amazing!!!

I think probably my all-time favorite would be "Illumination". I also really liked "Made for Love" (which was on Codebreaker, but didn't have the yelling choruses). I have all their music, and really like the vast majority of it, but I do have my favorites... :)

I have the mega black box set and I thought those signatures were printed. So they are real?! That’s extremely sincere of Mark and Chris to spend time to sign each copy. Now were positive about this right? I don’t want to be all excited about their autographs and they turn out to be printed!
I hate you lucky people with your $18 mega black box set and your $7 naïve dance and your $.50 machines cd….Oh you make me mad. I bought mega for $55 (cduniverse.com) naïve dance for $31 (ebay) and machines for $10 (ebay also). Hey, I don’t care! I would’ve spent $70 bucks for naïve dance because it’s so damn hard to find and I had everything but that so I had to get it!!!!! I love it too. Ha, I’m still a hater but whatever! LOL. What I really want is naïve art on 12”. I have dance, Broken heart, Russian radio, and If I ever. I DJ for fun at underground clubs and private parties.
Niños_Del_Brasi commented about Amoeba in Hollywood…I went there and all I seen were Codebreaker, Naïve art (special edition), and a bunch of used The Bitter End. I went there to look for naïve dance! Didn’t have it. ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤s! No I’m just kidding. It’s a great store. Good prices. I bought VNV nation PTF, Haujobb Polarity, Front 242 Pulse, Soft Cell 12” Tainted Love all for $28… no Red Flag though.
I want VNV Nation’s Burning Empires…I have no clue why it’s so expensive! Who cares if its limited. They keep on making them I assume…..?......I want it only because it’s so expensive. As if my ears are listening to gold. Hehe.
Speaking of thrift stores!!!!!!! I’m A huge fan of them and I found a Michael Jackson Thriller tour shirt…size MEDIUM! Perfect fit. Yes! And I found two more Members only jackets to add to my colorful collection of 8. I’m hunting for an ALF shirt…but I can’t find a vintage looking one.
OK. I talk too much to make it seem like I’m depressed.
Bye.Sargon.

sargon - the sigantures are NOT PRINTED, as i said i have two copies and the signatures differ in writing AND position. and by the way - it would have been much more expensive printing those signatures that way as signing the booklets as RED FLAG did. so be happy about the TRUE AUTOGRAPHS !!!!
by the way - i guess i have the NAIVE DANCE on vinyl. if u want it its all a question of money. i can also do a copy on cd cause the sound from vinyl to cdr is at least 2 or 3 times better than the original cds. in most cases i transform my vinyls to cd with my marantz cd recorder and the result is simply fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!
all the best and by the way...i paid as well veeeery much money for my red flag releases so dont feel alone with taht. but theyre worth every buck and i´d pay even much more for em.
all the best,
tom aka molesharding ;0)

Oh thats easy Steph...Basically just stick to the cassette section for rare stuff, you'll have to look through their out of order arrangement, but theres some good stuff in there...You have to still be down with cassettes though :)
As for cd's, I basically stick to the out of print section...They have an entire section (last I was there) in the middle of the floor labeled Rare and Out Of Print...Basically it's in the regular used cd bins...All of the out of print cd's are stickered that way on their price tags...I found some cool Insoc, Red Flag, Duran Duran, etc. last time I was there as well...
HAPPY HUNTING!!!

there are a few things about their discography. first of all, the vinyl mixes from naive art are much better than the cd album and i can't find them, i don't understand if there's a cd with those versions or you can only have them if you get the vynil. i don't have naive dance or the fear series. i do have the megablack cd series and i wonder how could i get those....
i have no credit card and even though i had one, there are some kind of 'cd mafia' here in uruguay at the mail........
i was wondering if there's some way that you could send a copy for me or give them to me through the internet.....please........
i could give you some compilations of great bands instead. and my love and gratitude
