yeah, there's a rather popular "synthpop" act (or two) that play live fairly regularly based right out of that area... i'm sure they're somewhere on the roster of acts playing that festival, aren't they?

Yeah, it was a surpirse to me too. If someone hadn't posted the info in the yahoo synthpop group, I would've never known.
Hope there's a large turnout.

You probably hadn't heard about it, because it wasn't official until 2 days ago. So you did hear of it pretty fast, right ;)
Take care,

I hope ADD least spend the money on the flyers to promote this event. Maybe, an ad on free local city paper?
Wait... What am I thinking?
This is Synthpop. Yes, reduce your exposures.
Only send out emails.

Actually ADD has planned some cool stuff to promote it in the eastern part of the country. It's 6 weeks out, so I wouldn't stress too much of not seeing or hearing any promotion yet :-) Looking forward to meeting you Anna and Kris who I haven't talked to in a long time!
Take care,
Ken

Sounds like a great event. Anything with Todd Durant's involvement will be well promoted.

Hehe. Well, believe it or not, this thing was BARELY set in stone last Friday (I think this thread started that same night). So, the fact that you now know about it means that word travels very fast.
Unlike some past festival or conventions, this one has not been in the works for months in advance. It was organized quickly, over the duration of about two weeks, simply to get a low-cost, multi-band event together.
Advertising has barely begun with the usual "press-release" announcement, which you saw here, passed along by NJOberheim, and also appearing in Side-Line newsletter, etc. Tonight (Tuesday night) it will be announced on Long Island's only cool major radio station WLIR (during the Contrast Radio show), and of course it will be announced and promoted on a local leven by Club Detour.
There are 1,000 CD's being pressed as "musical flyers" which are being mailed out to synthpop fans in NY, NJ, and CT starting next week, plus Detour and WLIR will be giving a few hundred of those away in the local area.
So, it's a small advertising blitz. But that having been said, let me just mention a couple of differences between this festival and past multi-band events:
This costs $10 per night to get in (two nights), rather than $50 or $60 or $100.
This event is being held in a very small, intimate venue (maximum capacity is 400 people, and that's shoulder-to-shoulder). So, we really don't need 1,000 people to show up...if they did, we'd be in trouble :-)
This event has some relatively new bands in the scene as well as a couple of veterans, all of whom are coming to play simply because they WANT to, not because they are being paid to appear. Thus, the price can stay low and we can still have a great party with some great music.
Anyway, I think it will be a really fun party, maybe on a smaller scale than past multi-band events, but certainly with less risk that things can go wrong. If you can get to the NYC area that weekend, it will be a lot of fun for you to stop by, hear some live music, do some CD shopping, and dance until the wee hours of the morning with some great synthpop DJ's too.
If this event goes well, showing that a small multi-band event can be successfully organized and promoted and be well attended (meaning 200-400 people show up each night), then we definitely plan to host similar events in different locations (though probably with different bands each time) during the coming months. I don't see why other bands and other labels and other promoters wouldn't put together even more of these shows if they find out it can really be done with little financial risk to all parties :-) In fact, I believe Plastiq Musiq has done a similar festival with success.

NOW SEE folks... this reads more along the lines of what I was yabbering about when we were flaming Synthcon 2002 :) With EXTREME props to all of the organizers that pulled off/tried to pull-off those large-scale productions... they are money pits.
This is how you do it. Small, regional, small venue... all underground acts with no "Celebrity" snaz that ends up blowing the budget up.
You can get regional turnout for events like this if you geographically locate them in strategic places (for instance, umm, CHICAGO... next?)
Anything where atleast 1/2 of the bands are coming from close to the venue and may already have followings.
Label-sponsored which is good for the entire label's catalog.
Sorry to break this down so capitalistically but in the end you want your PR to atleast pay for itself... and this looks like it has a good chance of doing that...
Good luck and props for pulling together something so quickly.
Peace
dave

Anyone who has been to Detour would be a bit surprised by this figure 400. I would recon 150-200 can fit in there. Anyone hanging out there who can back me up?

I just wish we could get Slayer or Judas Priest on such small notice. I would even settle for Iron Maiden. I have tried on several occasions to contact their management. If any of you have any contacts who deal with these legends, please, please let me know.

What up:
Anyone know the ordering of the shows yet?
I'm from way south New Jersey and its a haul for me to get to LI. I don't wanna miss NCS or B machine so I'm hoping they are later in the evenings.
anyone? Bueller?

B! Machine and New Clear Sky are both on Friday. Somegirl, then B! Machine, then New Clear Sky.
If you're there by 9:00 PM, you should be fine to catch the whole show, no problem. We wanted the bands to all be finished up by midnight so that nobody is playing really late, and the DJ's can take the folks who want to dance late into the night.

Well, it's with great shame that I say I cannot attend. NY is a wee bit far for my current concert budget. (I'm still recovering from the $2000 trip to Toronto last summer.)
Now... let's talk SF, SD, or LA (in that order)... I'd even drive up to Seattle for a similar line-up.
Well Todd? How about it? :) Hopefully this concert will be well-attended enough to allow the rest of us an opportunity for some Synthpop lovin'.
-ng
PS Todd (or anyone else), anything happening in the SLC area July 24th -26th? I'll be in town, looking for something, anything, to do.

Hey RobKrush!
i just heard your interview with Platform one and it was really cool! I've been to Pure a few times - its a great club... nice outdoor smoking patio too!! :) *gotta love the new ny laws huh?Rob's right - the place is on the small side, if you're going... get tickets right away!
I have a question....
How about doing a real NY Synthpop fest with NY bands at Pure?
I would love to see that happen with Brand New Idol and Platform One headlining!!
xo, anna
~autobahn
June 11th, 2003, 08:20 AM
I agree with anna! Pure is a cool spot, but real small, which makes it a little too intimate when the crowds start to jam the place. As for the NY synth fest, maybe I'll see ya there at the June 28th fest?????
Rob: GREAT SHOW.
Contrast is a real treat bro, and if you remember during the new clear sky show, i called in a little innebriated to give a shout to the band... sorry if i made little sense. That paranoid cover sent us over the edge... Hope to see you at pure, and make sure ya tell those guys to play that song!!!!!
