Isn't ''Charlotte Sometimes'' by The Cure one of the most BEAUTIFUL, haunting, brilliant, simply Perfect songs ever written?
I've always liked them a lot and always were one of my 3 fave bands, but the last 3 months I've... become really, really obsessed with them. Might be because I was going through such a difficult phase of my life and everything just clicked, their songs were as if written for me.
This is a revelation! I can't believe I had their songs lying around my home for almost 10 years and woke up only now to their magnificence!
..well, it's never too late to become a convert (although at the age of 14 I was already dressed in black and listening to ''Disintegration'' ,to my friends' worries).
Hallelujah!

there seems to be a cure song for just about every emotion...they are brilliant.

oh yes robotiko...
you are absolutely right!
they can lift you up and bring you down, all you have to do is choose....they have a song for every single emotional stage a man could experience

i'm envious... i wish i was discovering the cure for the first time again... it was about 20 years ago for me now and work did they ever blow me over... i wanted to be robert smith when it grew up all through 8th grade and 9th grade.... but :( I didn't have the cheek bones..

It should be the original version of Charlotte Sometimes though. I think the live versions aroud are to fast :)

The version from ''Live in Paris'' though, is great-very atmospheric! That song was the one that got me hooked...I've been listening to them non-stop for the past three months and nothing else enters my cd player! I'm going to get ''Pornography'' next week-everyone says it's the best Cure album (with Disintegration) and so I'm very, very excited about it..
Oh, Cliffwalk...I envy you too! How it must have been to be around when it all started...
and, yes, I think that the Cure are one of the very few bands that are still maikng good songs. Even ''Wrong number'' is very good ,compared to what else is around these days, which I can't say, sadly, for some of my other favourite bands.
Right now I've entered my ''Cure madness'' phase: ''Primary'' on the cd player, Cure ringtones on my phone, I only talk about them and all my friends are going mad...I'm trying to find good posters as well, but so far,no luck with the Internet..
Life can really be amazingly beautiful sometimes...

This is *the* song that got me into The Cure. I absolutely LOVE this song! Have you seen the video? I saw it two years ago. I really liked it. :)

I'd seen it a long time ago,but couldn't remember much, and I saw it about a year ago again on Launch. It's a very nice one, but I 've been reading that people don't like it that much, they think it doesn't capture the idea of the song and it's a bit weak (?).I like it though, and it reflects the 80's so much. Makes me wish (like so many others) I'd been growing up at that time, such a pity I missed it...I was only a toddler back then.Better late than ever, though...
(plays ''Charlotte sometimes'' for the 10th time today)

I could play Charlotte Sometimes over and over again and not get sick of it. It's such a perfect song!!!! I haven't listened to The Cure in quite a while. I guess I need to listen to them again. :)

still waiting for the (ill)famed boxset of bSides and rarities.
as for the band and their output very very few individual songs disappoint (FoxyLady didnt need to be done, but i know why it was). the albums (and yes, imo, incl Bloodflowers and WMS) are always a treasure cove, so to speak. the way Bloodflowers opens, on the fade in, how you can hear the kick drum pedal squeak is great. maybe im just taken with ambient noises in recordings, who knows.....
was listening to theBanshees' Hyena LP this morning...w/ Robert on keys and gtr.
Pornography being their best...im not of the same opinion. dont get me wrong, i like the album immensely for its sound, but if i had a choice, SeventeenSeconds or Disintegration are at the top for me.
a song for every emotion...i would agree wholeheartedly. then again, when youve been creating music since the mid 70s, you better have that range at this point.
CharlotteSometimes...a great song...a half decent dated video.

The Cure... they're lovely...oh the days of youth and reckless abandon have now come to pass for me ( I hope not)!
I really fancy their song called "Catch"! Have you ever heard of this song dizzyd and watched the video? You'd probably like it as well! Their music is so touching and their old works are just brilliant! Can't believe I've been a fan for just under two decades! Oh my word...how time has flown! Nam`aarië!

"Charlotte Sometimes" is also a favorite of mine...I personally like the video very much. I enjoy Primary, but Seventeen Seconds is probably my favorite. I also think "10:15 Saturday Night" and "Three Imaginery Boys" from the first album are classics.

''Catch''- yes Tal, that's lovely, especially the video! I was listening to ''Faith'' these days, and I was completely taken with ''The funeral party''...such a beautiful song. I've always been a sucker for the melancholic ones, and this song has such an ethereal quality...It amazes me as well that they have such variety in their music. ''Love cats'' was one of my favourites, and that's completely different, very playful. ''Want'' from WMS - I just love it! It is difficult to say which is my favourite Cure album (I haven't heard all of them), but for now, I suppose somewhere between ''Faith'', ''Disintegration'' and ''17 seconds''.
Another thing that makes me love them is their lyrics. They're full of emotion and so personal, you can just totally identify with what Robert's singing about. And ''Lovesong''...I can't ever listen to it without becoming all watery round the eyes. Few other bands have written such strong emotional songs.
I'm still waiting to get my hands on ''Pornography''...but from the songs I've heard this album must be *the* best work they've done (One hundred years is so beautiful)...

<Another thing that makes me love them is their lyrics. They're full of emotion and so personal>
funny. i was having this conversation recently with a friend. Robert is completely full of null and void in the lyric department, and no, it's not personal. thats not to say he doesnt conjure great images with his words...but he was married before Distegration and has been with the same woman since theCure began (whether or not there was infidelities i dont know...). so all his singing of lost love, and lovers dying, etc, and first person point of view for these subjects is completely fiction.
i dont know of any married couple who doesnt have their hard times, but from the way he sings/writes...the marriage was on the rocks before it even began.....know what i mean?

the cure..despite my varied tastes (synth/ industrial/ punk/ metal/ jazz/ old country/etc. ) it alaways comes back to them..they are and will always be my favorite band...there is just so much emotion and memories wrapped up in them for me....i was interviewed for a magazine once and they asked why music meant so much to me (and in turn the cure) and i couldn't begin to express it...i love that i'm a long time cure fan..but there certainly was something really exciting and special about the first time i heard them...as for charlotte sometimes...brilliant song... one of my all time favs...and i was told once upon a time that the video was filmed in the same asylum in england that adam ant's "goody two-shoes" video was filmed in...hmmm...anyway.. enough babbling...love to the cure.....lol

God, I use to be so into them as a teenager. Horded the most ridiculus collection, something like 400 live shows and every version of every song ever done. Barely listen to them any more though; just got to the point of saturation. Charlotte is great, but the violin version of All Cats Are Grey still gets me every time.

You know, if you guys keep talking about the Cure I'm going to have get more of their songs that I like. I have a best of compilation that I made, which has my favs (the obvious best singles like Fascination Street, Lullabye and such, plus the HOTD songs I like). An X of mine has EVERYTHING. I may have to tie her up and take her Cure collection.

I used to have this cassette tape (showing my age again) of all these b side and rare track up until 1988. of course, with a few moves and all i probably couldn't find it now if i tried!
skylla - i love "give me it" too but i think the whole album is great!

no argument there... but to me "give me it" is really a standout track on that album. i mean... the energy in that track is so intense. it ought to have been the soundtrack for fear and loathing in las vegas or that "taking a cold turkey from drug addiction" scene in trainspotting where the babies crawl on the ceiling and all that.

The Top is one of my favorites as well. I have a copy on vinyl in pristine condition. :D
For me the standout track of the album is BirdMad Girl. This song doesn't get enough love in my opinion, I think it's just about the sweetest Cure song ever.
"Oh I could be
A polar bear...
It's impossible"
I love the way Robert's voice sounds in this song. It always makes me smile.
But then again, I'm strange...

No I don't. It takes a true artist to project feelings and emotion that they themselves may not have lived through...but for some reason can relate too. So what if it's fiction and not biographical...it's still brilliant. Do you think the Romantics actually wrote everything from first hand experience? Does this make them "null and void" as well?

Indeed! It is truly a gift of the artist/songwiter to delve deep into their creative being and put those images and words to paper and song! Many artist's have this ability yes, but few really excel at it! I think Robert and the band have proven this over the decades because the fans respond so enthusiastically! The Cure would not be so adored and so popular if they didn't not have the ability to touch their fans and speak to them on so many levels through their music! Fiction or non-fiction is irrelevant!Cheers!

I lived in a small town where MTV wasn't heard of. The first video I ever saw on MTV, was The Cure's "Fascination Street". I have loved them since. They can do no wrong, IMHO. :)

As far as the writing goes - I don't think it's necessary to have lived through things to be able to express the emotions; it's about having a darkened, passionate soul that FORCES you to write, and drives you to attempt to convey emotion, regardless of whether you've been there, done that.

I couldn't agree more!Robert is truly gifted, and he deserves a place among the great poets. His lyrics are pure poetry and I've rediscovered my old excitement in music by listening to The Cure, one I'd gradually lost over the years. At the moment I'm lost within ''Pornography'', it says so much for me...and ''Head on the Door'' as well. I saw an old concert at the Glasgow Barrowlands on telly recently, where they played a lot of the Top album. I don't have it yet, but I liked this one song, ''Piggy in the mirror''so much. And my favourite along ''Charlotte'' at the moment is ''One hundred years''...so true...

... actually it's HAROLD and joe :)
it's from the never enough single which also has a great remix of let's go to bed... but yeah, a great song with the cutest little sitar-like hoke-line. generally the cure has made some fantastic b-sides.

harold and joe..excellent song!!! i have always been a HUGE fan of the cure's bsides..it seemed like quite often they were even better than the single....i'm a bit obsessive when it comes to music in general, but especially the cure....when is that box set coming??? the episode of south park with robert smith i consider one of the highlights of television..lol....as for robert smith's lyrics vs. his actual life...part of writing is a bit of fiction and embellishment..i mean, i don't think s.p.o.c.k. have ever actually tangled with a klingon...i though that was what art was kind of about....anyway...my two cents...

I LOVE Harold and Joe!
Never Enough is NOT one of my favorites, however...but I bought the cd single back in 1990 just for Harold and Joe. I'm listening to it now. :)
My ex used to insist that 'Japanese Whispers' was their best album, and we had genuine FIGHTS over this subject. I used to consider 'The Head on the Door' to be their best. I still love The Blood and A Night Like This, but I'd be ecstatic if I never heard In Between Days or Close to Me again for the rest of my life. So I no longer consider HOTD to be my favorite.
My favorite Cure song is The Caterpillar, which I NEVER hear anymore. It would be so awesome to hear that one of these days at a club, instead of In Between Days or Just Like Heaven!
It's hard to pick a favorite Cure album. I own HOTD, the Top, Kiss Me, Mixed Up, and Disintegration on cd; and if I didn't love all of them, I wouldn't still have them!
I also saw the Cure in concert twice, back in the day. The first was Kiss Me, and I saw them again when they toured for Disintegration.

God, I just remembered the Staring at the Sea videos. What a horrid mass that was...and I loved every one of them. I can't decide which was worse the cornyness of Charlotte Sometimes or the jerky moving armadilo of Hanging Garden.
