Why you ppl so down on DM,oh they cant sing as well as they coudl b4,oh they are not electronic enough anymore,oh I dont like the dance moves on tour!

Stop being so fickle! DM are stil great! I think they sounded fab on the Exciter tour and there new material is there best yet!

And as for the dancing,jess..let them dance anyway they want. And ppl they are 40 now! They r not 25 any more.

Considering they have been going for 20 years they are in damn good shape! both looks wise and artisitic wise.

Not many bands are still going after 20 years and still putting on kick ass shows and making great records so cut them some slack!

i have to agree with you on their longevity and they do perform their older songs well and are farely good performers - i for one will never miss a tri-state area dm show, but the releases after sofad are kinda.. eh.. demo-ish sounding and there isn't that much dynamic anymore.

dm songs used to introduce new sonic elements into their repetitive synth lines as a song went on, so there was always something new to listen to even if it was within the repeated chord structure.. the later stuff seriously just sounds looped

also, dave's vocal melodies (and mart's harmonies) had a lot more variance in the verses... again, now it's almost the same thing with every verse.. which is a shame because i think his voice has improved since ultra so the material he's now singing is kind of a waste

i hope dave really belts on his solo project, as it will give us the opps to see what he would do outside of martin's control.

Dave's voice will never be the same (sadly) after he went and screwed it up with the drugs...I still think he's got some good notes to hit, and like vleon 101 I'm anxious to hear wht he does without Martin helping him out...

Actually Dave really screwed his voice up the most by forcing low register and chest tones out with blasts of air. The rest (drugs, booze, smoking) are secondary issues.

Although I HATE Exciter as an album: I REALLY DO.... Big disappointment. I do have to admit that Dave's voice sound awesome on it.

The melodies are weak because they're written poorly. Sorry, Martin, but you're capable of better, I've heard it.

The only two things I liked about Exciter was that David sings with some dynamic range instead of belting like he was 20 and untrained AND the really unique production quality... I really like how they have the lower frequencies mixed... you don't even hear them unless it's on a stereo system that can handle them... that's awesome.

Dave

I'm just repeating what I read Dave Gahan saying himself in a three part NME interview he did in 1996 just before the release of Ultra :)

After more than 20 years of making music....HOWEVER IT SOUND WHILE RECORDING/PRODUCING....DM must be doing something right to stay on top!!!

You learn from your mistakes and move on....and let the chips fall where they may....Its extremly hard work recording, composing and touring states to promote your career...not to mention the time spent with/without families...GET A SERIOUS GRIP GUYS...LIFE IN ITSELF IS JUST AS TOUGH!!!!

20 yrs. and hopefully counting! People will change (voice, dance moves, music style(sound), etc. I do agree about voice change but, I think Martin sounds the most different. Dave sounds a lot better than he did in concert for SOFAD. All in all, they're my favorite band. I don't care if they're doing the moonwalk and singing with some kareoke machine!

Depeche Mode was, is and always will be the greatest electronic band! I have never been disappointed by a show and in fact just the opposite... Every time I've seen them I've been blown away.

Even when they make drastic changes (SOFAD) that scared the bejezus out of me I have learned to appreciate those changes as time went on. I think SOFAD is a great album now and I think that back then it was just more a matter of wanting them to stay the same.

I thought the same way when Cause and Effect released Trip and more recently with Exciter... I was a fool to judge them so quickly.

Very few bands make it 20 years nowadays and even if they do how many bands successfully change/adapt their sound. Can you imagine DM still putting out music like Speak & Spell... I don't think I could be a fan if that were the case.

I agree.

I think that most of us feel that there's nothing original about what they are doing right now. That it's just music and not so much depeche mode's music. More programming, less experimentation.

I personally, like SOFAD and Exciter. Even though I like both albums, I still agree that they aren't as dynamic as their previous material.
