I am looking forward to David's new release. I don't think it will suck. I read that some of the songs were like Depeche Mode, yet some were different. I also heard that one of the songs scared the producers. So who knows. I am hoping it will be a pleasant suprise. If not, there is always the upcoming DM album. :)

For some reasons, I just think that Martin's album is gonna be better than that of Dave's. I just can't wait to hear another new materials from Martin. Who knows what musical direction Dave's going to take with his solo project, what I'm sure of is that Martin's has produced one AWESOME EP; and I just have faith in Martin's musical ability. He's going to produce another masterpiece. Don't worry about Martin....... He's the genius member of DM !!

yeah I have to agree with that. I think Violator was the last complete album they did that was good. I only liked maybe 3 songs on SoFaD, and hated ALL of Ultra, except maybe "It's No Good", and Exciter wasn't too bad, but overall kind of a yawner, and none of the songs had staying power. like 2 months after I stopped listening to the album I couldn't even tell you what any of the songs sounded like.

@Gahan Man--if DM releases a new album at the end of 03 - I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D I was impressed with Exciter even tho I think it is not one of their strong albums, I was thinking they can still kick it after all these years, unlike MOST groups out there. I have total faith Martin's album will be great, as usual, probably melodic, emotional, easy to sing along with. Martin is one of the most talented songwriters in the latter half of this century. I think its easy to doubt Dave b/c of the rumors of his stuff in the past getting rejected and the fact that he's been the singer --not the writer, but I think he can pull something cool off. From what I know, he has been influenced by experimental jazz stuff, especially from ***** club (leaving name out) which really excites me alot! I love hearing that music when I go there!!!!!!!!!!!! Also if you listen to who the producer is, Sigur Ros, you know he can't go wrong. I would love to hear experimental weird stuff coming from him, however, we shall see if he is truly a music writer or if he should just stay in the visual arts (painting and fashion) - either way I know Dave is a creative person and the "rejection" from Mute Records was because it sounded DIFFERENT and not bad, it was a song that did not fit at all into the Mute Records mold. Another rumor was that there is are at least 5 tracks that are supposed to be great.
Of course we will not doubt the greatness of a new DM album, as one has never come close to sucking - I even love A Broken Frame. :D

I personally think Martin's album will be better than Dave's for a couple reasons...First off, he's a musician, Dave isn't...By musician, I mean that he has demonstrated he can write a song, play an instrument etc...Dave will be relying a lot more on his producers and arrangers rather than his own insights to get his message across...I also feel that Martin's album will be a lot more daring, and stretch across the genre gaps...Then again who knows, I could be completely wrong...Afterall, Dave used to program all of DM's drum samples back in the days, maybe he's picked up a thing or two...I guess I'm just a little biased after the whole "Song For Europe" cover...Ugh, what a nightmare of a song that was :)

Song For Europe was wicked. Man that man can get more emotion across in one note then most singers can get in a whole song!

Hum, gotta agree with Gahan Man. I actually like Song for Europe. Although it lacks a little in the musical area, I think its simplicity makes Dave's voice all the more powerful.
Maybe I just like all the images in it.

Probably cocaine.

Bad song choice for Dave to have chosen. If I would have chosen a Roxy Music song for Dave to sing it would have been "Both Ends Burning" They could've gone down about a 3rd and it would have fit his voice and style nicely.

I heard that Martins new cover sound a bit dreary and melancoly...like the floof himself....but who knows...Martins talent super-cedes any time frame.
And as for Dave, he stated that Martin writes a certain style and that he wanted to get away from the 'certain syle'.....so it will be quite an interesting 2003 to see which Mode man will be on top of the charts...
Also, I heard that Dave will tour certain cities to promote his cover...IS THIS TRUE?....anyone know the specifics of this rumor??
I, for one can't wait to hear both albums...THEY ARE SUCH TERRIFIC GUYS, AND I LOVE THEM BOTH DEARLY!!!

I can't wait for Martin's album to come out! I'm not too fond of cover cd's but I can't wait to see how well martin can give these songs his on twist. I really hope DM puts out an album. It would be nice if they'd also go on tour again but I'm sure I'm pushing my luck on that one! :)
Oh yeah by the way I'm new to the board! Just wanted to say hi!

If he is done, Well cool then! Velvet, what I heard was recent and from a work-related person I thought I would trust, but perhaps they didnt know the info themselves. I have not been online much lately b/c I have been very busy with things in my life like looking for work. So thats why I have not been around. : ) Anyway happy new year!

Hello everyone, it's good to see and read out there everybody's opinions and thoughts about Dave's and Martin's solo projects. I think It should not really matter who's better or so, instead we should show more support to them. Though It will be very interested to hear each others own solo projects. I am sure that they both will have a song or 2 that will really captivate us, just like the Dmode songs. Even though Martin's are covers from some of his favorite songs, and inspirations. Maybe Andrew should release one of his own too, so they can all have their own solo project. (HAHAHA J/k) well I just hope with them releasing their solo stuff won't be thee end for Depeche Mode!!!!
Always Devoted, Fidel...

All I have to say is that Martin's album is very cool!! I'd say its close to the sound of Exciter but has a lil more edgier sounds on some songs, some good programming here, IMHO its a good Album.

February 25th, 2003, 06:20 PM
I don't like what I've heard (which are samples). I really don't. The programming sounds like it may be nice in places but really... the ideas are pretty trite.
I doubt I'll buy it.

woopidy dooo...........
more crap being released by DM (at least its a remix album, so it should not be bad)..............
sorry, but DM is dead in my book. I am super mad at Dave and Martin (for their crapy releases), and ofcourse at Alan for ever leaving DM.

Wait a second, are you telling me there are people out there who dislike A Broken Frame?! I wonder if they're the same people who hate Ultra (which I also can't fathom)...
I mean, "The Sun and the Rainfall" should provide anyone with enough reason to like ABF. :}
{alright, so this's a bit off-topic...}

I LOVE A Broken Frame! It's a great album. I love: The Sun and the Rainfall, Monument, Leave in Silence and Nothing To Fear. It's head and shoulders above Speak and Spell in my book.

I may be in the minority here, but A Broken Frame is the pinnacle of DM for me. Nothing in my view has ever bettered it, although admittedly Violator is pretty good.
Mind you, this could just be coz I'm an old fart who remembers them breaking through initially...

In the vein of personal opinion, Dave's album is Very good, minus "living for the bottle" Martins album is a bit too much like exciter, which... well you know. A broken Frame is a good album, how can anyone "Diss" a track like Satalitte? Im a Black Celebration junkie myself, and I didnt really like Ultra all that much when it came out but after hearing Exciter i think its a great album in comparison :)
They need to give us at least one last Flood produced type album, something more themic, more big chords and power less farty little rythem and country/soul. again just a humble opinion.
Keep Modeing

ha ha i know just what you mean the first time i got exciter on i spent the whole album waiting for the big drums and lead synths to come in a la stripped. for me i like speak and spell maybe my age and the fact that i grew up about 10k from basildon so they where very much 'local boys' at the time. but the later stuff mftm and violator are very much my fav's kinda lost interested with sofad although that tour was way better than the violator one except for the outdoor gig's I'm not a big fan of them well not in the u.k anyway :)

hmmmm...I have to listen again to both albums...each time you listen to an old version of the original version...it messes with your current 'time frame'...then you have to re-group and start from scratch....
.....anybody like Music from the Masses?...just curious. Its one of their best, then Exciter would be next, its just my own opinion Moders.

I'm eager to hear both solo albums, because let's face it Dave and Martin are two very different people and I'm guessing this will show in their efforts. I've heard good things about both of them. Funny how they mesh well as group members, when they seem like total opposites...
As always, looking forward to a new DM album of any kind....

I *really* love Depeche Mode, but (and I'm sorry if I offend) it was all downhill (for me, personally) after "Ultra".
I found it hard to find any of the hooks that hooked me to begin with.

Jamie,
I was that way for a while too, but I was kinda out of the loop music wise for a while. Having listened to "Exciter" more and more lately, I'm finding I can appreciate it just as much as the older albums...not the same at all, but I have learned to enjoy it none the less. But I can understand your point of view, I've heard many longtime fans say the same thing. It would be nice if the next DM album contained some of those hooks from wayyy back in the day!

Lyn,
That would be great if DM would sort of swing the 80s way again...but Exciter is a totally different ballgame!! Try listening to MFTMs it will take you by surprise...the lyrics, the tones, melodies...all will leave you wanting for MORE!!!
YIPEE!!!....yes Stephanie, just two more weeks.....then....MARTINS SOLO CONCERT!!!!
