Wow I wasn't going to say anything this month (and still plan to stay rather quiet) but I'm impressed...
The moving lines Andrew creates are so fresh for such a simple chord progression... I'll admit I hear more DM in this song than I expected to hear but that just happens... it's unavoidable... Great bass lines as usual. Vocals/Songwriting are excellent as expected.
I'm looking forward to hearing the CD when it's released... Thanks for pointing out the link, I missed it.

I had NO idea that there was a new song up. That shows how much I pay attention to things. I am going to wait until I get my hands on the entire album. I want to hear all the tracks at the same time with the words in front of me. I am glad that you all like it though. I know it's going to be phenomenal! :D

It's very groovy. These guys are setting the standard. But to be honest, I'm not really surprised =]

These guys had talent from day one. It's no surprise to hear that their stuff is good.
It does surprise me that people are worried about Andrew joining the group. I have heard from various people that they are worried that Iris won't be as good. I tell them not to worry. Andrew's truly capable of getting the job done. If it has the Iris name on it, it's going to be fantastic! That's a given. :D

Well, these weren't people from the Lone Star State. Besides, if *you* rave about it, it must be good. You wouldn't hype it if it were utter crap. I trust you. :)

I will buy the lowtech album, but it has to be next month. I bought a record and took my mom out to dinner on New Year's day. I spent more than I should. Oops! I did order the iris album when I got paid. That was the first thing that I did. :D
As for mesh, watch it sucka! Don't be dissin my band. I will have to come out there and hurt you. :p

Incredible song! I believe that Reagan said somewhere that this isn't synthpop (probably in an attempt to cross to more listeners, which is not an unworthy goal). I would disagree but that would get us into that big genre discussion again that I'm not in the mood to re-hash at this moment. Sufficeth to say that this is my kind of music and I hope the rest of the release is as good, and I believe it will be.
Viva el Iris!

Not really synthpop, that's true. Still, it's a very pop friendly tune and I really like it. The album is looking more and more promising every day!

still, not a lot of response so far. I don't know what accounts for that, so i have to wonder what the response really is. are those in the other forums, such as Depeche Mode, seeing the link ... anyone who wants to go spread the word would be most appreciated.

Greetings, Reagan. I'd love to write you a lengthy reply about all the good things Iris has done for me, but as I'm new to the forums I'll try to keep it brief. :}
I introduced a friend of mine who could be classified as a rivethead to Iris, and she is completely bowled over. "Unknown" was actually the first song she heard, so she was not busy comparing the new material to the old. She had a jaw-dropping response to the former, and after downloading "Vacant" she described it as "incredibly sexy," and coming from her I believe that's a genuine compliment, not snide or sarcastic. "You get lulled into it, the song leads you through on a leash. And there's something sensual about the casual delivery of the lyrics and the subtle rising and falling inflection," to further quote her.
So using her as an example of a new fan, I'd say your attempts at blurring genres and abolishing labels are going very nicely. The new material reminds me more of a band like A23 (fellow DM fan, yes?) than anything "synthpop." It's very powerful. I've loved Iris for awhile, but "Unknown" in particular dazzles me like no other song, while "Vacant" on headphones is immersive and oceanlike.
I know that my friend and I are just two voices in many, and so this feedback may be of limited use, but I hope it's a little helpful.
Best regards,
Areia

I took your comment to heart also Reagan and I emailed all my friends and family that had any inkling of good music taste to come and sample your work by downloading "Vacant". I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.

label me a hostage of the past....but i dig the grooves of Disconnect more than the current material of IRIS!! tropically speaking, just cannot disconnect myself from the things that wired me tightly to duo's previous LP......well let's see what the future bring.....but still dunt wanna be awakened from the sleep DISconnect soporifics gave me :)

I do it all the time... It doesn't work as well as I hope usually, people simply are REALLY slow to react these days and get into new music.

Listening to "Vacant" for the first time while typing this....
It's been a while since I've listened to Iris (for no real reason), but I'm very impressed by this track. I own "Disconnect" and the "Danger Is The Shame" single (which is also the first song I heard by Iris, back when they weren't so un-forgiving, heheh). I listened to "Disconnect" a few times after I bought it, and thought it was decent enough but lacking, for want of a better word, the glue that brings separate tracks together to make something which can be perceived as an all-round "good album". It reminded me of the way I felt listening to The Nine's "Native Anger" (their first album), in that there were a handful of really good stand-out tracks that didn't seem to fit with the remaining tracks. I think I'm right in saying that "Disconnect" was recorded over quite a lengthy period of time, in a similar way to The Nine's album, and various new equipment, inspirations and techniques likely added themselves as time progressed. I think this is probably the reason why I haven't listened to "Disconnect" more. Listening to that CD, it was blatantly obvious that Iris had great potential, but after a while I moved on and thought that they had too.
Fast-forward to 2002... I read that Iris were coming back, and saw that they were being produced by Andrew Sega aka The Alpha Conspiracy, whose bootleg remix of Depeche Mode's "World In My Eyes" had made me wonder why other bootleg remixers weren't as good as this bloke. For various reasons (mostly ignorance), I didn't pick up the "Unknown" single and still haven't heard that song. I think I'll wait for the album to hear it.
So what do I think of "Vacant"? Very nice indeed! Iris have definitely matured in their sound with Andrew's expert assistance, and Reagan's vocal delivery also seems to have improved in leaps and bounds since "Disconnect". If all the tracks on "Awakening" are of the same quality as this one (and why shouldn't they be, eh?), then I think we're in for a treat. So where do I get my Iris t-shirt? :D

Can anyone please post the lyrics of Vacant?
I also gotta say, I like this track even more then I do Unknown, probably because I listen to it mostly on headphones on my comp, truly a sensation. Speaking about Unknown, when I let one of my friends hear it (who is normally only into the mainstream sh*t) he totally loved it and immediately asked me for some more songs from Iris (i pointed him out to Vacant). He loved it too, so I think you got a new fan :D.
Replying to a comment earlier in this thread, I really can't see how you can go wrong with Andrew Sega joining Iris. I don't know how he does it, but just everything he tracks rocks. Since I discovered andrew's early mod's and later the alpha conspiracy, Diffusion Records music is the only thing I listen to. Why? Because I just know that's the best you can get.
BTW, (offtopic) I'd really like to see a remix and polishing up of the 'Point of Departure' mod, like Andrew did with Martian Lovesong :D.

I'm glad to see someone finally mentioning Andrew's background :) I dug back into it and checked out the stuff he did as "Necros" and am impressed at his output.
I also had the same reaction to Unknown from some friends who have mainly mainstream tastes...
I think this album may get a slow start in sales because of the way the world works but it will probably grow fanbase big time... I have to hear the whole enchilada to confirm this but I think I may end up correct in my assumption.

Yes, I totally agree with you. It's sad actually that sometimes the best bands are unacknowledged just because the perticular genre isn't that popular. I fail to see how you can prefer most trance rubbish above well-made music like the Alpha Conspiracy, and Iris. I don't want to start a mainstream/alternative discussion here, I just think if bands like these would get more publicity in the big public, they will rise to popularity much quicker.
BTW, I'm by no means an Andrew Sega 'veteran', I've only known his music for about a year now. I just came in contact with the music thanks to my cr*ppy 486 and a game called In Pursuit of Greed that andrew tracked the music for :D.

pencil: Andrew's talked once or twice about having worked out a few updated versions of that song, but without success to the point of creating something that he'd consider releasing. Maybe the new album will have something along those lines, maybe not.

This song blows my mind!!! It's my favorite track from Awakening and it was hard to choose. The music and the lyrics totally compliment each other. The music is as rich as the vocals. This song is haunting. I was sorely tempted to listen to this song before I got my cd but I waited. I am soooo glad that I did. I love this song!! :D I am certain that I will wear my cd out on on this song alone. I cannot get it out of my head. Incredible! Incredible! Incredible!
Here are the lyrics. I hope that I don't get into trouble for posting them. If I do, I will edit this post. Here ya go:
Vacant
deep inside
you're the rogue
while your soul's gone hiding
dare you say
here your love is won
in your age
answers come
still you're undecided
hurting as your body comes to play
but you keep......
living the same way
cheating your mind's ache
telling yourself your life isn't empty
seek what you want or think that you need
but this life still won't be giving
vacant stares
hollw spin
get you all excited
left unseen
the one who you've become
you're in place
to find the wall
and without you knowing
there your torutred innocence has crawled
but you keep.....
living the same way
cheating your mind's ache
telling yourself isn't empty
seek what you want or think that you need
but this life still won't be giving
