You're the man, johncool. I can't believe that I missed your post for the better part of a week. Here's is some more info from the news section of www.petshopboys.co.uk :

Six months after the release of 'Please' in 1986, its dance-remix companion 'Disco' followed. In 1994, 'Very' was followed by 'Disco 2'. So in February 2003, 'Release' will be followed by 'Disco 3'.

However, unlike the first two 'Disco' albums, 'Disco 3' will include new dance tracks recorded during the 'Release' sessions. The full track-listing is as follows.

1. Time on my hands
2. Postive role model
3. Try it (I'm in love with a married man)
4. London (Thee Radikal Blaklite Edit)
5. Somebody else's business
6. Here (PSB new extended mix)
7. If looks could kill
8. Sexy Northerner (Superchumbo mix)
9. Home and dry (Blank and Jones mix)
10. London (Genuine Piano mix)

'Positive role model' and 'Somebody else's business' were recorded in Berlin with Chris Zippel at the same time as 'London'.
'Try it (I'm in love with a married man)' is Pet Shop Boys' version of a 1983 Bobby 'O' song. A different version was heard on Radio One's John Peel Show a few weeks ago.

'If looks could kill' is a new recording of a PSB song also heard on the John Peel Show.

'Time on my hands' was written and recorded at the end of 2000 and recently completed and mixed. It features vocals by both Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant.

'Disco 3' will be released internationally by Parlophone/EMI in early/mid February. A limited edition, three-disc vinyl version will also be issued with an enhanced track-listing including an extended mix of 'Somebody else's business' and the WestBam remix of 'London'. Full details to be announced shortly.

: I think there is some great news here about the new album, I'm still left with doubts over it's release. I'm very happy that PSB are finally putting their version of "Positive Role Model" on an album. They've been debuted it back at one of the big Brit festivals at the end of the Nightlife tour, and it just missed being "the" single that was never released from the musical, so it's nice that it's finally found a home on an album. I was also just reading the interview with Chris Zippel on the PSB site and he said that his favorite experience was recording "Somebody else's business." Hopefully that will be good (as I haven't heard it yet).
However, maybe releasing a "Disco 3" isn't such a good idea. Looking at Amazon and other sites it looks like Disco 2 is the most hated PSB album (actually, I'm still kicking myself for not buying the limited 2-disc version of Disco 2 that came out a week after the regular version that had some great tracks on it. I've never seen it since the first time, when my friend picked up a copy and there was no track listing so I thought it might be the same album. Whoops). The first Disco is probably the second lowest on the PSB rankings, and really the best reason to pick it up was because for years it was the only place to find "Paninaro" and "In The Night." So will this be enough to turn off most fans, or is this a desperate bid for the attention of the (disco, not rock) fans who hated "Release?" Is there more than an EP's worth of material worth releasing? Why is the Westbam "London" remix only on the vinyl? Do we really need another album called Disco?

My advice, hold out for a month or so ( or save up extra pennies) and get the inevitable US edition which will have either a) a second Cd with bonus tracks or at least b) the extra remixes as bonus tracks.
Not being cynical here, I am a huge PS Boys fan, but it seems like every album after Please has been issued, and then reissued 6 months later with b sides or remixes. Great for the fans but I have learned to wait the boys out and just get the expanded issue.

Where was I going with this? Too damn early. Very excited about Disco 2. Yeah #2 was lame but to paraphrase a bumper sticker A bad Pet Shop Boys album beats a good mainstream album anyday!

I am pretty sure that they will have an uphill battle with this.....

This is about the least imaginative thing they could have done, and after Release being so mediocre, probably a mistake.

This could well put some nails in the coffin of their credability, as no doubt will erasures "other peoples songs".

yeah but like neil says this is an on going series.disco 2 was absolute rubbish but this is a bit different.it has new songs on it which the other 2 didn't, it has apparently a brilliant new version of 'here' on it, and it has a new mix of sexy northerner on it. the others were just made up of already released remixes and with this coming out in the uk on february 3rd could mean a reasonable chart position as the charts are still recovering from the greatest hits market and a lack of new albums!as for erasure they are dead compared to psb, you can't really compare the two bands in terms of commercial success. psb still go top 10 in album chart and top 20 in singles chart in uk whereas erasure struggle now to hit the top 40!i think the new erasure album will do okay though because maybe cover versions will appeal more to the casual listener and like the psb release it is out early in the year.psb i do not think have huge aspirations for disco 3 and neil says there wont be a huge marketing campaign.have erasure ever been as big as psb in america?

I'm definitely going to buy "Disco 3". I agree that "Disco 2" wasn't that great, but with "Disco 3", we get new songs as previously mentioned ("Positive Role Model" was officially released on the "London" single). I can't wait to hear the extended mix of "Here". That song, to me, is a classic PSB track. I love it. I like "Release" a lot. It has the classic PSB songs like "Home and Dry", "Samurai in Autumn" (which I read Neil say that the lyrics are actually about themselves), and "Here". Can't beat having Johnny Marr play on seven of the tracks as well. So, "Disco 3" may flop on the charts, but it won't stop me from buying it.

I'm hoping that Disco 3 is not one of those continuous track dance albums like Disco 2. It made Disco 2 sound really bad and cheesy. I'll definitely welcome a remix CD from the PSB but lets put entire tracks on the CD!!

On the questions section of their website Neil said that Disco 3 won't be a mastermixed like Disco 2. I actually liked the mixing on Disco 2, but it's the rare exception with me because I tend to not buy albums when I find they've been mixed. Since I last posted Disco 3 has gotten a release date and it has been confirmed that it will get a US release (which was something I thought might not happen). From www.petshopboys.co.uk :

Pet Shop Boys' own dance album, 'Disco 3', will be released internationally on February 3, except in the USA where it's release on Sanctuary Records will follow two or three weeks later. The definitive US release date will be announced in the New Year.

Disco 3 is a masterpiece compared to Disco 2 (Yuck).

THe slow piano version of London is very nice, and I like the
new songs, especially the version of "Try it" that was played
on that radio show - DAMN I love that computerized voice!!!
(And what a driving synth line!)
Also, it's great to finally here the final version of Positive Role Model.....
